Spring ISD Highlights Vine Mentoring Program for National Mentoring Month

January 08 2024

Spring Independent School District is celebrating National Mentoring Month — held annually in January — by highlighting its Vine Mentoring Program.

The Vine Mentoring Program began in 2020 and has grown every year since. It started with just 41 mentors connecting virtually with students from around Spring ISD, and has now expanded to more than 150 volunteer mentors meeting with hundreds of students at nearly every campus in the district. These mentors serve many roles with the students involved, acting not just as teachers and mentors but as coaches, listeners, role models, and advocates.

“Spring ISD is constantly focused on empowering young people, to help them find their passions, excel in school, and thrive in life well past graduation,” Tranita Carroll, Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement, said. “The Vine Mentoring Program helps us to fulfill that mission, offering a unique blend of support, guidance, and encouragement to our students.”

“The Vine is more than just an initiative. It's a testament to our community's dedication to nurturing the potential in every student,” Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa said. “It shows that in Spring ISD, it takes a village to foster and grow our students into successful adults. It’s incredible to see not only our staff but members of our community get involved, reinforcing our belief that when we invest in our youth, we're investing in a brighter, more promising future for everyone."

Success stories abound. High school students from the program have explored higher education opportunities through college trips, from Sam Houston State University to Prairie View A&M University and beyond.

To celebrate National Mentoring Month, Spring ISD is set to host a series of events, like the Mid-Year Meet-Up Dinner. For a full list of events, please visit www.springisd.org/calendar

Those interested in becoming mentors with Spring ISD will need to commit to spending 30 minutes or an hour with their student each week. Meetings can take place either in person or virtually. Training and guidance is available with Vine Mentoring Program coordinators, as well. Contact mentoring@springisd.org or visit www.springisd.org/mentor for more information.
