For thousands of families across Spring ISD, Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a date on the school calendar. It is a chance for students to see their culture reflected in their classrooms, for families to share traditions across generations and for the broader community to recognize the people whose stories are part of the district every day.

Spring ISD will join schools and communities nationwide in observing Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, honoring the cultures, histories and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

For families in Cypress Terrace, the month also provides an opportunity to celebrate the students, parents, educators and staff members who contribute to the identity of Spring ISD and the communities it serves.

Hispanic Heritage Month Holds Special Meaning Across Spring ISD

Hispanic students, families and employees are an integral part of Spring ISD, contributing to the diversity, character and day-to-day life of campuses across the district.

Superintendent Dr. Kregg Cuellar said that diversity creates opportunities for students not only to celebrate their own backgrounds, but also to better understand those of their classmates.

“Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths,” Cuellar said. “The cultures, experiences and perspectives represented across Spring ISD make us stronger and create meaningful opportunities for our students to learn from one another. Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of our Hispanic community, honor the pride they bring to our schools and ensure every student knows their heritage and that their story matters.”

That message reaches beyond individual classrooms. In a district made up of families with different cultural backgrounds and experiences, celebrations such as Hispanic Heritage Month can give students a greater sense of connection to their schools while creating opportunities for classmates to learn about traditions beyond their own homes.

For Cypress Terrace residents with children in Spring ISD, the observance offers another way to connect what students learn at school with the histories, food, music, language, traditions and family stories that are already part of life at home.

Spring ISD Invites Families to Join the Celebration

Spring ISD is encouraging students, parents, employees and community members to participate in Hispanic Heritage Month activities throughout the district.

Families and staff can share photos and highlights from campus celebrations on social media using #CelebremosSpringand tag Spring ISD on Facebook, Instagram and X.

Those posts can help showcase the many ways individual campuses recognize Hispanic and Latino heritage throughout the month, from classroom lessons and cultural activities to student performances and other school celebrations.

The district is also asking the community to help identify students, teachers, staff members and local residents whose contributions and personal stories deserve additional recognition.

Spring ISD Seeking Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight Nominees

Spring ISD is accepting nominations through its Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight form for people whose experiences, service or contributions have made an impact on the district community.

Submissions are due Monday, Sept. 14, just before Hispanic Heritage Month officially begins on Sept. 15.

Selected students, educators, employees or community members may be featured on Spring ISD's social media channels during the celebration.

For families in Cypress Terrace, that creates an opportunity to recognize someone who may already be making a difference close to home — whether that is a student sharing pride in their heritage, a teacher connecting with families, a staff member serving a campus or a community member supporting local schools.

Why Hispanic Heritage Month Runs From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15

Unlike many commemorative months that begin on the first day of a month, National Hispanic Heritage Month starts on Sept. 15 and continues through Oct. 15.

The observance provides schools and communities across the country with an opportunity to learn about the histories and cultures represented across Hispanic and Latino communities while recognizing their contributions to American life.

Within Spring ISD, the district is using that national observance as a starting point for something decidedly local: giving students and families opportunities to share their own traditions, experiences and stories with one another.

A Celebration Rooted in the Spring ISD Community

As Hispanic Heritage Month approaches, Spring ISD is encouraging its entire community to participate — not only by attending or sharing campus celebrations, but also by taking time to learn about the people and traditions represented throughout the district.

For students, seeing those stories recognized at school can reinforce the idea that their own family history belongs within the larger story of their community. For classmates, the month can open the door to learning about neighbors and friends in a way that goes beyond textbooks.
