For students in the Smith Middle School band program, years of rehearsals, concerts and steady work are about to lead somewhere few middle school musicians ever get the chance to go: a national stage.

The Smith Middle School Varsity Band has been invited to perform at the 2027 Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis, marking the first time in the Cypress school’s history that its band program will perform at the national festival. Smith is one of only 14 middle school concert bands from across the country selected for the 2027 event.

For Smith families and the wider Cypress-Fairbanks ISD community, the invitation is more than another entry on the band’s list of accomplishments. It puts a local group of young musicians alongside some of the nation’s strongest scholastic music programs and gives the next generation of Smith band students a chance to build on work begun by students who came before them.

“The invitation means an incredible amount to our program because it represents years of work and a vision that our students are capable of achieving at the highest levels,” said Stephen Van Hooser, Smith director of bands. “For the last three years, we’ve intentionally worked to create a culture of excellence and to give our students opportunities to share their music beyond our local community. For the first time in our school’s history, the Smith Middle School band will perform on a national stage.”

Smith Middle School Joins Select Group of Bands Nationwide

The Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha and Sweetwater, is scheduled for April 1-3, 2027, in Indianapolis. Music for All describes the event as a non-competitive national showcase bringing together outstanding middle and high school bands, orchestras, percussion groups and chamber ensembles.

A total of 65 ensembles from 16 states have been invited to the 2027 festival following an application and audition process. Smith appears on Music for All's official list as the Smith M.S. Symphonic Winds and is among 14 ensembles selected for the middle school portion of the National Concert Band Festival. 

Unlike a traditional competition built around rankings or trophies, the Music for All National Festival emphasizes performance, education and growth. Participating musicians perform for experienced audiences, receive feedback and clinics from nationally recognized conductors and educators, and hear other accomplished student ensembles from around the country.

The selection process also asks a great deal of the bands before they ever arrive in Indianapolis. Music for All required middle school and high school bands seeking invitations to submit an unedited recording from the 2025-26 school year, with evaluators considering both technical ability and musical expression. 

A Recording in Cypress Opened the Door to Indianapolis

Smith's road to the national festival began months before the invitation arrived.

The 2025-26 Smith Varsity Band performed a special recording concert at the CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center in May. The recording was submitted in June and reviewed as part of the festival selection process. Van Hooser received the invitation in late July.

“I’ve told our students for years that excellence is worth pursuing, even when you don’t know where that pursuit will eventually take you,” Van Hooser said. “This is one of those moments where they get to see that hard work can create opportunities they may not have imagined for themselves.”

There is another layer to the story that makes the invitation especially meaningful for the program. Many of the students whose performance helped earn the national invitation have already moved on to high school.

The first students Van Hooser told were current Cypress Ranch High School band members who had either performed with the 2025-26 recording ensemble or had been part of Smith's band program during its recent growth. In that sense, the trip to Indianapolis will connect two groups of students: the musicians whose work helped earn the invitation and those who will now carry Smith Middle School onto the national stage.

“Our theme for the year is ‘From Achievement to Adventure’ and many of the students who performed on our recording last year have already moved on to high school, but their achievement created an opportunity for the students who came after them,” Van Hooser said. “Now, a new group of Smith students gets to take that achievement and turn it into an adventure. They’ll travel to Indianapolis, perform alongside outstanding music programs from across the country, experience a national festival, make new memories and friendships and see firsthand where their hard work can take them.”

Community Can Hear the Band Before Its National Trip

Before Smith Middle School musicians leave Cypress for Indianapolis, the community will have an opportunity to hear them closer to home.

The Smith Varsity Band send-off concert is scheduled for March 24, 2027, at 7 p.m. at the CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center. The concert will be open to the public, giving parents, former students, educators and community members an opportunity to support the musicians ahead of their national festival appearance.

For a middle school music program, the trip represents both a destination and a starting point. The students who made last year's recording helped open the door. The students walking through it in 2027 will have the chance to see how far the skills developed in a Cypress band room can carry them.

And for younger musicians watching from the chairs behind them, Smith's first trip to the Music for All National Festival may make a national stage feel a little less distant.
