When it's finally time to swap out your couch for a new one, or upgrade your bedroom suite for a fresh look, most homeowners initially consider selling their items on an online platform, or giving them away to a friend or relative. While making a little extra cash is nice, selling items to unknown individuals through the internet can be risky, and can become a hassle if potential buyers aren't biting. On the other hand, giving your items away to friends or relatives can also be a burden, leading to injuries from loading and unloading, costs to rent a truck, waiting for them to pick it up, and more.

Avoid the hassle and consider donating your furniture to a local nonprofit and make a difference in your community!

Several local nonprofits in the Katy area offer convenient pickup services right from your home. Not only can you declutter and make space, but you can also support important causes in the process. Here’s a breakdown of some great organizations and how you can easily and conveniently schedule a pickup:

Katy Christian Ministries

About: Katy Christian Ministries operates resale stores filled with gently used and new clothing, furniture, and household goods. The proceeds from these sales are vital for providing services such as financial assistance, food, and crisis intervention for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Acceptable Items: Furniture, appliances, electronics, housewares, and clothing in good, working condition. Note that items must be free of stains, tears, or excessive pet hair. New mattresses must still be in their original plastic wrapping.

Unacceptable Items: Damaged or broken items, items with excessive pet hair, and pianos (though donations are accepted at the 1st Street location, pickup is not available).

Pickup Information: Pickups are only available for large items from ground-level or first-floor locations. Schedule a pickup based on your zip code zone here.

 

Fort Bend Women's Center - ThriftWise

About: ThriftWise (formerly PennyWise Resale) is more than just a thrift store—it’s a place where your donations help survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault. By shopping and donating here, you support the Fort Bend Women's Center's mission of sustainability and community impact.

Acceptable Items: Sofas, dining tables, bedroom suites, recliners, and dressers.

Unacceptable Items: Mattresses (except new or in original wrap), sofa sleepers, futons, car seats older than 4 years, cribs, built-in appliances, oversized desks, and certain technology and media items.

Pickup Information: Schedule a pickup for large items like furniture here.

 

Hope Chest Resale Market - Katy

About: Hope Chest offers a boutique-style shopping experience with a focus on designer clothing, home decor, and furniture. Every purchase helps support Cy-Hope, which works to empower underserved children in the community.

Acceptable Items: Household items, furniture in good condition, appliances in working order, tools/building materials, lawn equipment, and antiques (even if they need repair).

Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity - ReStore

About: The ReStore is a home improvement thrift store that sells new and gently used building materials and furnishings at discounted prices. Proceeds go towards eliminating substandard housing in Fort Bend County through Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity.

Acceptable Items: Furniture (sofas, loveseats, dining room sets), appliances (less than 10 years old and in good working order), plumbing supplies, electrical fixtures, flooring, and blinds.

The Salvation Army

About: The Salvation Army offers a diverse range of programs to assist people in need, including homeless shelters, Christmas assistance, alcohol and drug rehabilitation, and youth development programs. Donations of furniture, appliances, and other items help fund these life-changing programs.

Acceptable Items: Furniture, household items, clothing, and electronics in good, working condition. Items should be clean and free of major damage.

Unacceptable Items: Items that are damaged, broken, or excessively worn may not be accepted.
