Scouting for Food Returns to Houston: Scouts Fight Hunger Across the Greater Houston Area
Over the weekend, door hangers appeared on front doors across the Greater Houston area, signaling the much-anticipated return of Scouting for Food. This impactful service project, led by the Sam Houston Area Council of Scouting America, mobilizes Scouts across 16 Southeast Texas counties to combat food insecurity and support local food banks.
What is Scouting for Food?
Scouting for Food is one of the largest annual food drives in Southeast Texas, empowering Scouts to collect non-perishable food items for families in need. The initiative teaches youth about economic disparities while fostering community involvement and service.
The project spans two key dates:
-
January 25, 2025: Scouts distributed door hangers in neighborhoods to raise awareness about the upcoming food drive.
-
February 1, 2025: Scouts return to collect food donations, delivering them to local food banks and pantries.

A Tradition of Service
Last year, Scouts in the Big Cypress District collected over 42,000 pounds of food, providing enough supplies to feed 4,500 families until May 2024. Many of these donations were delivered to Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM), a long-standing partner in the effort to combat hunger. CAM, which served over 27,000 people in 2023, values its partnership with Scouts, who contribute significantly to its outreach efforts.
“This initiative demonstrates the core values of Scouting—loyalty, kindness, and service,” said a representative from the Sam Houston Area Council. “The dedication of our Scouts and the community’s support make this event a success year after year.”
Why It Matters
Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in the Greater Houston area, where over one million people, including one in five children, struggle to access their next meal. The return of Scouting for Food is critical in addressing the growing demands placed on local food banks, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic.
How You Can Help
The success of Scouting for Food relies on community participation, and it couldn't be easier to participate. Residents are encouraged to leave non-perishable food donations in clearly marked bags outside their front doors by 9:00 a.m. on February 1, 2025, for Scouts to collect. Suggested items include canned vegetables, pasta, rice, and boxed meals.
“This is more than just a food drive—it’s a way for local kids to make a real difference,” said another Scout leader. “By donating, you’re supporting not just a family in need, but also empowering youth to learn the value of service.”
