Principals at Jenkins ES, Roberson MS Named Spring ISD's Principals of the Year

February 22 2024

On her way back to campus after an off-site meeting on Tuesday, Cecily Parker, the principal at Jenkins Elementary School, had no idea that the school was abuzz with activity as students, teachers and staff made their way to the school’s gymnasium.

But after she walked into the side door of the gymnasium, it was immediately clear that this was not a typical day. A wave of sound – excited screams from Jenkins students – and the faces of her family members welcomed her as she walked in, all there in celebration of her being named the Elementary Principal of the Year for Spring ISD.

“I could not have done this without my team,” Parker said. “It’s because of all the people in this room who have poured into me. My biggest thanks belongs to my staff. They have embraced me and taken me in as family, not just as their principal.”

Parker was surprised by Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa and other members of district leadership, as well as members of her family including her mother, husband and daughter, and cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Each year, the Principal of the Year recognition is awarded to one primary and one secondary level principal each year, with finalists selected based on campus data and observations, student assessment, and feedback from other district leaders and members of the community. Dr. Hinojosa said the process to select the Principals of the Year also includes final interviews.

“We have a lot of principals to pick from,” Dr. Hinojosa said. “Of course, it is difficult because we have a lot of amazing principals throughout Spring ISD. But these principals continue to show that they are leading dynamic campuses, and the results are there with test scores, attendance rates, and the overall feel of the campuses.”

Later that day, over at Roberson Middle School, a similar scene took place in the school’s large group instruction room, as that school’s principal Cecelia Brumsey walked in while her friends, family members, district leadership, and other supporters waited behind the stage’s curtain.

“I really don’t know what to say,” Brumsey said. “I’m shocked, I’m honored, and I’m grateful. I’m grateful to be the principal of these remarkable students on this remarkable campus.”
