More Than 340,000 Meals a Year: How Meals on Wheels Montgomery County Is Helping Local Seniors and How Residents Can Make a Difference

North Houston
October 09 2026

For many older adults across Montgomery County, remaining in the home they love depends on things most people take for granted: a nutritious meal, a ride to the doctor or simply having someone check on them. As more seniors face challenges with mobility, limited incomes and isolation, one local nonprofit is working to make sure they have the support they need.

Meals on Wheels Montgomery County (MOWMC) has spent more than five decades helping homebound seniors and veterans maintain their independence through home-delivered meals, wellness checks, transportation and companionship. Its work reaches communities throughout Montgomery County, including Conroe, The Woodlands, Magnolia, Montgomery, Willis and surrounding areas.

The need is substantial. According to the organization, Meals on Wheels Montgomery County delivered approximately 340,000 meals during fiscal year 2025, while its transportation program provides more than 21,000 free rides annually. Yet even with that reach, seniors continue joining a waiting list for assistance, with the organization reporting an average wait of 100 days.

Behind those numbers are older neighbors who may be living alone, managing health challenges or struggling to afford the necessities that allow them to remain safely at home.

More Than 50 Years of Helping Montgomery County Seniors Age in Place

Founded in 1973 to support Montgomery County's growing senior population, the nonprofit adopted the Meals on Wheels name in 2016 to increase awareness of its services.

Today, the independently operated 501(c)(3) nonprofit prepares fresh meals at its Conroe facility and relies on volunteers to deliver them directly to homebound seniors.

But the deliveries serve another important purpose. Volunteers provide friendly conversation and a wellness check, offering reassurance to seniors and family members who may not be able to visit regularly.

For someone who lives alone, that brief interaction can be one of the most meaningful parts of the day.

The organization also operates free, curb-to-curb transportation using ADA-compliant vehicles, helping older and disabled adults reach essential medical appointments and other important destinations. Its transportation services help address a common obstacle for seniors who no longer drive but want to continue living independently.

According to Meals on Wheels Montgomery County, nine out of 10 clients say its services help them maintain their independence.

The organization reports that 83% of its clients consider their Meals on Wheels delivery their primary meal of the day. Additionally, 91% report improved emotional health and feeling safer through the program.

Demand is also continuing to grow. The nonprofit reports that new seniors are added to its waiting list each month, a challenge influenced by an aging population, financial insecurity and increasing needs among older adults.

For families trying to help aging parents or grandparents remain in their own homes, these services can offer another layer of support. For seniors without nearby relatives, they can be especially important.

A Volunteer Friendship That Went Beyond Meal Delivery

One example of the organization's impact involves Montgomery County resident Joanna Garratt, who began receiving Meals on Wheels services in 2019.

According to a story shared by the nonprofit, Garratt, then 86, was struggling with rising rental costs that placed increasing pressure on her fixed income.

Bob, an 83-year-old Meals on Wheels volunteer who had spent 16 years serving local seniors, had developed a friendship with Garratt through his regular deliveries.

When he learned about potential affordable housing opportunities in The Woodlands, he helped her explore the possibility.

After a 14-month wait for housing, Garratt secured an apartment. Bob went a step further, renting a box truck and organizing helpers to assist with her move.

The nonprofit reported that Garratt's new rent was approximately one-third of what she had previously paid, giving her greater financial breathing room.

Her experience demonstrates how the relationships formed through routine meal deliveries can sometimes lead to assistance far beyond the original service.

How Meals on Wheels Montgomery County Supports Seniors Beyond Lunch

While weekday meal delivery remains central to the nonprofit's mission, several additional programs address challenges that can be overlooked.

Breakfast Bags provide supplemental shelf-stable foods and breakfast supplies, helping seniors have something available over weekends or when unexpected circumstances interrupt their routines.

The aniMeals program addresses another difficult situation: seniors who struggle to afford food for their pets. Supported by donations from the Humane Society of Montgomery County, the program supplies dog and cat food so older adults do not have to choose between feeding themselves and caring for their animal companions.

The nonprofit's free senior transportation program also helps residents attend medical appointments without depending entirely on relatives, neighbors or costly private transportation.

Together, these programs reflect the reality that aging in place requires more than having a roof overhead. Nutrition, mobility, companionship and everyday security all play a role.

How Montgomery County Residents Can Help Meals on Wheels

Supporting Meals on Wheels Montgomery County does not necessarily require a large financial contribution. The nonprofit offers opportunities for individuals, families, churches, schools, neighborhood groups and local businesses to participate.

Donate to Help Reduce the Senior Waitlist

According to the organization's financial information, $2,600 supports one senior for an entire year, and more than 90% of donated dollars go directly toward programs and services.

All donations remain in Montgomery County.

Residents can make a one-time gift, become monthly supporters through the Monthly Meal Makers program, contribute in honor or memory of someone or explore planned giving options.

Donations help sustain meal preparation, deliveries, transportation and additional services while supporting the organization's efforts to reach seniors waiting for assistance.

Residents can contribute through the organization's official donation page.

Volunteer to Deliver Meals or Help in the Kitchen

For residents who would rather give their time, volunteer opportunities include weekday meal delivery, Saturday Breakfast Bag delivery and helping prepare or package meals in the Conroe kitchen.

Businesses can also adopt weekly meal delivery routes, allowing employees to rotate responsibilities and participate as a team.

Volunteers must complete the organization's application process, including a waiver and background check.

Those interested can visit the Meals on Wheels Montgomery County volunteer page or email volunteers@mowmc.org.

Organize a Neighborhood Food Drive or Group Service Project

HOAs, civic clubs, churches, schools and community organizations can help by hosting food drives, preparing special bags for seniors or coordinating group volunteer activities.

Food drives are particularly useful for supplying pantry staples that seniors can keep available between deliveries or during emergencies.

Community groups interested in participating can contact Natasha Romagnoli at 936-271-2184 or Natasha@mowmc.org.

For neighborhoods looking for a meaningful community service project, collecting shelf-stable food or assembling breakfast bags offers a practical way for residents of different ages to contribute.

Support the Mission Through Local Business Catering

Meals on Wheels Montgomery County also offers a catering service called Meals with Meaning, providing food for corporate lunches, meetings and other events.

According to the nonprofit, each $20 catered meal purchased also provides a nourishing meal to a homebound senior.

Businesses interested in the program can learn more through the organization's catering page.

Why Supporting Local Seniors Matters to the Entire Community

As Montgomery County continues to grow, caring for longtime residents and older neighbors remains an important part of maintaining strong, connected communities.

For some seniors, independence means being able to stay in a familiar house, surrounded by memories and neighbors they have known for years. For others, it means being able to attend a medical appointment without worrying about transportation or having enough food available until the next grocery trip.

Meals on Wheels Montgomery County helps address those everyday concerns, but its continuing waitlist shows that the need has not been fully met.

A donated meal, a few hours spent volunteering or a neighborhood food drive may seem like a small contribution. For the person receiving that support, it can mean another day of dependable nutrition, a familiar face at the door or the reassurance that someone in the community is looking out for them.
