A new home can come with plenty of questions, and some of them start the moment a homeowner looks out the window: How much should the lawn be watered? What plants actually belong there? Why is that shrub already struggling?

For Legends Ranch residents trying to get a new yard off to a good start — or make sense of an existing one — the Montgomery County Master Gardener Association is offering New Homeowner Landscape Basics on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office, located at 9020 Airport Road in Conroe.

A crash course in caring for a Montgomery County landscape

The five-hour class is designed for people moving into newly constructed homes, homeowners who are new to the area and anyone who could use a better understanding of basic lawn and landscape care in Montgomery County. The program will be presented by Michael Potter, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension horticulture agent for Montgomery County, along with experienced Master Gardeners. Organizers say participants will learn general landscape maintenance, how to identify common plants and ways to troubleshoot problems that often show up in newer landscapes. 

That local angle can be especially useful in a fast-growing part of Texas, where a landscape that looked polished on move-in day may still leave homeowners wondering about turf, soil, irrigation, trees and plants as the seasons change. The goal is not to turn participants into gardening experts in one afternoon, but to give them a more confident starting point for taking care of what is often one of the most visible parts of a home.

Registration is $30 per person, and the class is limited to 50 participants. Lunch, snacks and additional materials are included. Advance registration through Eventbrite is required, and organizers say walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Check-in is scheduled from 8:30 to 8:55 a.m.

Who are the Montgomery County Master Gardeners?

The Montgomery County Master Gardeners work through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to share research-based gardening information with the community. Their stated mission centers on educating residents through demonstration, fellowship and horticultural information backed by research. Beyond classes like this one, the organization offers gardening resources, educational events and a Master Gardener Help Desk where residents can bring questions about lawns, plants, pests and other landscape concerns. 

For a Legends Ranch homeowner who has ever wondered whether a brown patch is caused by disease, watering or something else entirely, that Help Desk is another resource worth knowing about. Residents can reach the Montgomery County Master Gardener Help Desk at 936-539-7824 during weekday office hours or connect with the organization through its website and event updates. 

Want to become a Master Gardener?

Residents interested in going beyond the occasional class can also apply to become Montgomery County Master Gardeners themselves. The program includes an 84-hour horticulture training course, traditionally held in January over seven weeks, followed by a first-year volunteer service requirement. Training covers topics including landscaping, soils, insects, plant diseases, vegetable gardening, lawn care, composting and plant propagation. Prospective members are required to attend an annual orientation before applying; the organization advises contacting the Extension office for details on the next session. 

For homeowners who are still learning the difference between what a landscape needs and what it merely looks like it needs, the Oct. 3 class offers a chance to start with local information rather than trial and error — and perhaps save a few plants along the way.
