For students interested in agriculture, skilled trades, leadership or military-focused education, one of Medina Valley ISD’s newest facilities represents more than another construction project.

The district will celebrate the new Agricultural Science and JROTC Building at Medina Valley High School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, marking the completion of a project intended to expand opportunities for students while supporting programs that have long been part of the high school’s identity. 

For families in Potranco Ranch West, the opening also provides another tangible look at how voter-approved bond dollars are reshaping a school district that continues to grow at a pace few communities in Texas are experiencing.

New Medina Valley High School Facility Was Part of $376 Million Bond

The Medina Valley High School Agricultural and JROTC facility was included in the $376 million bond package approved by voters in May 2023.

That bond also funded Creek View High School, districtwide safety and security improvements, traffic improvements and future land purchases. Creek View High School opened for the 2026-27 school year, while the district lists the new Medina Valley High School AG/JROTC building among its Fall 2026 projects. 

The timing is significant for a district managing sustained enrollment growth. Medina Valley ISD reports that it has been growing by roughly 10% to 15% each school year and now serves approximately 10,500 students across 10 campuses, including two high schools, two middle schools and six elementary schools. 

That growth has required the district to add campuses while also investing in specialized spaces where students can pursue career, technical and leadership programs.

Agriculture Remains a Major Pathway for Medina Valley Students

Agricultural education is particularly important at Medina Valley High School because the campus remains the district’s home for several agriculture-focused programs.

Medina Valley ISD’s Career and Technical Education program offers agricultural pathways in Animal Science, Applied Agricultural Engineering, Plant Science and Food Science, connecting classroom instruction with hands-on experiences and potential careers. 

The district describes its broader Career and Technical Education program as a way for students to explore careers, build real-world skills and prepare for college, employment or other opportunities after graduation. High school students can pursue programs of study across 12 career clusters, with some pathways offering opportunities to earn industry-based certifications while still in school. 

Agricultural Science also occupies a somewhat unique position following the opening of Creek View High School. When Medina Valley ISD established attendance zones for its two high schools, the district specifically identified FFA and Agricultural Science as programs offered only at Medina Valley High School, allowing some students otherwise zoned for Creek View to request to remain at MVHS when qualifying for those programs. 

That makes the new facility relevant not only to current Panthers but also to students across the growing district who want to pursue agriculture-related studies.

Medina Valley students have also built a track record in FFA competition. In recent years, district teams have advanced in agricultural advocacy, public speaking, agricultural mechanics and other contests; Medina Valley FFA teams have also earned state-level honors, including state championships in Public Relations and Agricultural Advocacy. 

New Space Also Supports JROTC Leadership and Service

The other half of the facility supports Medina Valley High School’s Junior ROTC program, which focuses on citizenship, responsibility, leadership and community service.

Medina Valley High School operates the TX-20009th Air Force Junior ROTC, whose stated mission is to improve citizenship through teamwork, ethics, self-discipline and responsible decision-making. The broader Air Force JROTC program is designed to develop citizens of character while teaching leadership, personal responsibility and air and space fundamentals. 

Students can extend those lessons beyond the classroom through activities that include academic competition, the Kitty Hawk Air Society, model rocketry, drone activities and community service-oriented teams.

For Potranco Ranch West parents weighing high school programs and future opportunities for their children, facilities like this help show how the district is trying to accommodate growth without limiting education to traditional classroom space.

Agricultural education can lead students toward careers ranging from animal science and plant systems to welding, agricultural mechanics and food science, while JROTC emphasizes leadership, service and personal responsibility. Together, the programs give students different routes toward a similar goal: leaving high school with practical experience and a stronger understanding of what they may want to pursue next.

Part of a Much Larger Medina Valley ISD Building Program

The new AG/JROTC building is one piece of a larger construction cycle underway across Medina Valley ISD.

Following the $376 million 2023 bond, voters approved another $290 million bond in May 2024. That package includes Middle School No. 3, Elementary Schools No. 7 and No. 8, improvements to physical education facilities at Medina Valley High School, additional safety and security work and land purchases for future campuses. 

Middle School No. 3 is currently expected to open in Fall 2027, while Elementary School No. 7 is targeted for Fall 2028, according to the district’s construction updates.

The wave of projects reflects a broader reality for western Bexar County and Medina County communities: residential growth is continuing to place new demands on schools, roads and other public infrastructure.

For residents of Potranco Ranch West, that means district construction will likely remain a familiar sight. The new Medina Valley High School AG/JROTC facility, however, offers a chance to see one completed investment not simply as additional square footage, but as space designed around what students can learn and do inside it.

Medina Valley ISD’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Agricultural Science and JROTC Building is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Medina Valley High School.

The celebration will mark the formal opening of a facility that began as one line item in a voter-approved bond package and is now becoming part of everyday student life at Medina Valley High School.

As the district continues building schools and adapting programs for a rapidly growing enrollment, residents can expect more milestones ahead.
