Montgomery County Road Construction Update: Highway 105, FM 1097, I-45 and More
Several Major Montgomery County Road Projects Are Moving Forward, but When Will They Be Finished?
If you’ve spent much time driving through Montgomery County lately, you’ve probably encountered your share of construction cones, lane shifts and roadwork. With continued growth throughout the county, major transportation improvements are underway along several heavily traveled corridors, including Highway 105, FM 1097, South Loop 336 and Interstate 45.
For residents who regularly travel through Conroe, Montgomery, Willis or The Woodlands, these projects are worth keeping an eye on, particularly as several approach completion while others remain years away from being finished.
A transportation update published October 20, 2026, outlined progress on seven roadway projects across Montgomery County. Some were reported to be more than 90% complete, although several previously estimated completion dates have already passed.
Here’s what drivers should know about the work underway, the areas affected and the latest reported construction timelines.
Highway 105 Widening: Two Major Sections Under Construction
Highway 105 serves as an important east-west route through Conroe, connecting neighborhoods, businesses and major roadways throughout the area.
Two sections are being expanded from two lanes to four.
Highway 105 From 10th Street to South Loop 336
According to the October 20 transportation update, this portion of Highway 105 was approximately 65% complete.
The widening project is intended to provide additional roadway capacity along a busy stretch of Highway 105. Construction is expected to continue into 2028, with the reported completion estimate falling in the second quarter of that year.
Drivers traveling through the area should continue to anticipate construction activity as work progresses.
Highway 105 From South Loop 336 to Fm 1484
Farther east, construction was reported to be approximately 98% complete as of October 20.
The project’s previously reported completion estimate was the third quarter of 2026, which ended September 30. Although the reported progress suggests the project is in its final stages, the available update does not establish a revised completion date or confirm that all construction has been finished.
Motorists should continue following posted construction signs and traffic advisories until the remaining work is completed.
South Loop 336 Widening Continues Near Conroe
Another major project involves South Loop 336, where crews are widening the roadway from two lanes to four between Interstate 45 and Ladera Creek Trace.
According to the October 20 update, the project was approximately 80% complete.
Construction began in November 2024, with the latest reported completion estimate falling in the third quarter of 2027.
The project, reported at approximately $20.57 million, is intended to expand roadway capacity along this important Conroe corridor.
For Montgomery County residents who travel through Conroe for work, shopping, appointments or recreation, South Loop 336 is one of several projects that may continue to affect travel plans over the coming year.
Fm 1097 Improvements Near Lake Conroe and Willis
Drivers in the northern portion of Montgomery County are also seeing progress on FM 1097, particularly along the corridor serving the Lake Conroe area.
Fm 1097 From Blueberry Hills Road to Lake Conroe Hills Drive
This widening project was reported to be approximately 96% complete as of October 20.
The project is designed to provide additional roadway capacity along a corridor used by residents traveling between Willis, Lake Conroe communities and surrounding areas.
Its previously estimated completion window was the third quarter of 2026. Since that period has passed, drivers should treat the date as an earlier projection rather than a confirmed completion schedule.
Fm 1097 at Atkins Creek
A separate project focuses on drainage and roadway improvements near Atkins Creek.
The work includes culvert replacement and shoulder additions, improvements intended to address drainage needs and roadway conditions.
According to the October 20 transportation update, the project was approximately 95% complete.
This project also carried a third-quarter 2026 completion estimate. However, that window has passed, and the available information does not confirm a revised completion date.
Both projects appear to be in their later stages based on reported construction progress, but motorists should continue watching for traffic control measures until the work is officially completed.
I-45 to Highway 242 Direct Connector: a Longer-term Improvement
One of the larger transportation projects underway in Montgomery County is the construction of a direct connector from northbound Interstate 45 to eastbound Highway 242.
The Texas Department of Transportation identifies the project as part of its Houston District transportation improvements.
The new connector is intended to provide a more direct connection between two major roadways serving commuters traveling through southern Montgomery County.
The project remains under construction, with the October 20 transportation update identifying the third quarter of 2028 as its estimated completion window.
Published reports have differed on the percentage of work completed, so a precise progress figure is not included here pending confirmation from TxDOT.
For motorists who regularly use the I-45 and Highway 242 interchange, this is a longer-term project rather than an improvement expected to be completed in the immediate future.
Old Plantersville Road Rehabilitation Planned
Montgomery County is also moving forward with improvements to Old Plantersville Road.
According to the October 20 transportation roundup, county commissioners approved a construction contract in September 2026 for rehabilitation work along the roadway.
The reported project scope includes rebuilding the road, replacing existing roadway materials and widening the pavement to 26 feet.
The improvements would add shoulder space without increasing the number of travel lanes.
Construction was expected to begin in October 2026, although a confirmed start date and completion schedule were not established in the available update.
The reported contract amount was approximately $3.9 million. Residents interested in the project’s final scope and schedule can consult Montgomery County’s official Commissioners Court records for additional details.
What These Projects Mean for Montgomery County Drivers
Taken together, these seven projects address a range of transportation needs, from widening heavily traveled roads to improving drainage and rehabilitating existing pavement.
Some of the work is reportedly nearing completion, particularly portions of Highway 105 and FM 1097. Other improvements, including the I-45 direct connector and South Loop 336 widening, have longer construction timelines.
For residents, the most relevant projects will depend on which roads they use regularly.
Drivers traveling toward Conroe may be especially interested in Highway 105 and South Loop 336, while those heading toward Willis and Lake Conroe may want to follow the FM 1097 improvements. Commuters using I-45 and Highway 242 should be prepared for a longer construction timeline.
It’s also important to remember that construction schedules are estimates. Weather, utility work, material availability and other factors can affect when projects are completed.
