Drivers making their way through central Magnolia will want to pay closer attention to their usual route over the next two weeks as a road closure at Smith Road and FM 1488 takes effect Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The City of Magnolia announced Aug. 17 that the closure is scheduled to remain in place from Aug. 18 through Sept. 1, 2026, temporarily changing how motorists move through the intersection.

For residents who regularly use FM 1488, Smith Road or nearby Melton Street for work, school, shopping and other daily trips, the closure could mean adjusting familiar driving patterns and allowing a little extra time when traveling through the area.

What Magnolia Drivers Need to Know About the Smith Road Closure

A traffic-control map provided with the city notice shows barricades affecting the Smith Road connection on the north side of FM 1488, while traffic continues to be directed along FM 1488 and portions of Smith Road and Melton Street surrounding the intersection.

The affected area sits among several businesses along the FM 1488 corridor, making the temporary traffic change particularly relevant for residents who use the intersection for both through travel and access to nearby destinations.

Motorists should follow all posted barricades, directional signs and traffic-control measures rather than relying solely on their normal route through the intersection.

Closure Scheduled Through Sept. 1

The City of Magnolia lists the closure period as:

• Start date: Aug. 18, 2026
• Scheduled end date: Sept. 1, 2026
• Location: Smith Road at FM 1488 in Magnolia, Texas

The city’s announcement did not specify a reason for the closure or indicate whether weather, construction conditions or other circumstances could affect the scheduled reopening date.

For local drivers, the practical takeaway is simple: anyone traveling near Smith Road and FM 1488 in Magnolia should expect a change from normal traffic patterns through the beginning of September and consider additional travel time during busier parts of the day.

A Small Change That Can Affect a Familiar Magnolia Route

Road closures lasting only a few weeks can still have a noticeable effect when they involve streets residents use every day. FM 1488 serves as one of Magnolia’s primary east-west corridors, while Smith Road provides local access through the commercial area near the intersection.

That means the temporary closure may be especially important for commuters, nearby business customers and families moving through the center of Magnolia as the new school year gets underway.

Drivers should remain alert as they approach the intersection, watch for other motorists adjusting to the temporary traffic pattern and avoid attempting to travel through barricaded portions of the roadway.

The Smith Road and FM 1488 closure is currently scheduled to end Sept. 1.
