Learning Express Toys Coming to The RIM in San Antonio, Bringing Educational Toys, Unique Gifts and Family Fun

San Antonio / New Braunfels
October 14 2026

Families shopping for birthday gifts, educational toys and activities that keep children entertained may soon have another reason to visit The RIM Shopping Center in northwest San Antonio.

A commercial renovation project for Learning Express Gifts and Toys is underway at 17619 La Cantera Parkway, Suite 211, San Antonio, TX 78257, according to construction project information. The $102,000 project involves remodeling an existing 2,616-square-foot retail space, with work scheduled from October 15 through November 6, 2026.

The project brings attention to a specialty toy retailer that has built its business around more than simply selling toys. Learning Express Toys is known for combining educational products, creative activities and a neighborhood toy store atmosphere, offering an alternative to the traditional big-box shopping experience.

For families in the La Cantera area, including nearby communities along Interstate 10 and Loop 1604, the project could mean another convenient destination for children's gifts and hands-on learning products. However, an official store opening date has not been confirmed, and the scheduled construction completion date should not be interpreted as a grand opening announcement.

What Is Being Renovated at The RIM Shopping Center?

Plans for the new Learning Express Toys location at The RIM Shopping Center in northwest San Antonio are moving forward, with a $102,000 renovation underway to transform an existing retail space into a specialty toy store.

According to construction project information, the retailer will occupy a 2,616-square-foot suite at 17619 La Cantera Parkway, Suite 211, in Bexar County. The renovation began October 15, 2026, and is scheduled for completion on November 6, 2026.

The project includes removing unnecessary interior walls to create a more open shopping environment, replacing the existing ceiling grid and installing new lighting. The store's restrooms and stockroom will remain unchanged.

The updated layout could provide more room for merchandise displays and make it easier for families to browse the retailer's selection of educational toys, games, puzzles, arts and crafts, collectibles and children's gifts.

The renovation is particularly timely as the holiday shopping season approaches, although Learning Express Toys has not yet announced an official opening date for its new location at The RIM. The November 6 construction completion date does not necessarily mean the store will be ready to welcome customers that day.

Additional details about the store's operating hours, grand opening celebrations and available services have not yet been confirmed.

From a Massachusetts Toy Store to a National Specialty Retailer

Learning Express Toys has a history that began with a mother's search for better shopping experiences for families.

The company was founded in 1987 by Sharon DiMinico, who developed the idea after shopping for nursery furniture, baby products and educational toys while preparing for motherhood.

DiMinico recognized an opportunity for a different kind of toy store, one where parents could find thoughtfully selected products, children could explore new interests and families could receive personalized recommendations.

The first Learning Express opened in Acton, Massachusetts, in March 1987. DiMinico opened another location in Needham later that year, and the company began franchising in 1990 with its first franchise in Andover, Massachusetts.

Nearly four decades later, Learning Express has grown into one of the country's most established specialty toy retail franchises. According to its official franchise website, the company operates more than 85 franchised stores across 27 states.

Unlike many national retail chains, Learning Express locations are independently owned and operated through a franchise model. That approach allows individual stores to tailor merchandise and services to the families and communities they serve.

What Makes Learning Express Toys Different From Traditional Toy Stores?

One of the retailer's defining characteristics is its emphasis on toys that encourage children to explore, create, solve problems and learn through play.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on mainstream toy releases, Learning Express carries a combination of familiar brands, educational products, specialty gifts and emerging toy trends.

Its merchandise categories include LEGO building sets, puzzles, board games, arts and crafts, books, stuffed animals, sensory toys, collectibles, outdoor activities and gifts for tweens.

The retailer also pays attention to popular children's interests, including squishy sensory toys, blind-box collectibles and creative building activities.

For parents and grandparents, that variety can make it easier to find something suited to a child's age, interests or developmental stage.

The shopping experience is another important part of the company's identity.

Learning Express stores are known for offering opportunities to explore toys before purchasing, receive recommendations from knowledgeable employees and discover products that may not be readily available at larger retailers.

Participating locations also provide services such as complimentary gift wrapping, personalized gifts and birthday gift registries. Some stores organize children's activities and community events.

Those services vary by location, and it remains to be seen which offerings will be available at The RIM.

Learning Express Toys Has a History in San Antonio

Although the renovation at The RIM represents a new retail project, Learning Express is not a newcomer to San Antonio.

The company has operated in the San Antonio market for decades, including locations associated with Alamo Quarry Market and Stone Oak.

According to the company's 2023 franchise disclosure documentation, Learning Express opened a store at Alamo Quarry Market, 255 E. Basse Road, Suite 340, on July 28, 1997.

Another location opened at Village at Stone Oak, 22802 U.S. Highway 281 North, Suite 106, on September 19, 2008.

Both stores were listed in the company's historical franchise records, although those records do not independently establish their current operating status as of October 2026.

The retailer also has a broader Texas presence, with locations documented in communities such as Houston, Cypress, Bee Cave and the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Across the country, the brand's franchise network spans 27 states, giving Learning Express a national footprint while maintaining its emphasis on locally operated stores.

The renovation at The RIM would place the retailer in one of northwest San Antonio's established shopping districts, offering access to families from surrounding neighborhoods and nearby Hill Country communities.

When Will Learning Express Toys Open at The RIM?

The construction information lists November 6, 2026, as the anticipated completion date for the renovation.

That date does not necessarily indicate when customers will be able to begin shopping.

Before opening, a retail business may need to complete interior preparations, install merchandise displays, receive inventory and finalize any applicable inspections or approvals.

As of October 17, an official grand opening date, store hours and opening promotions have not been confirmed in the available information.

Residents interested in the new Learning Express Toys location can follow the retailer's official website for store information and future announcements.

For northwest San Antonio families, the project is worth watching. If the planned store moves forward, it could bring a familiar specialty toy brand to a convenient location where families already spend time shopping and gathering.
