July is 'Watch Your Car Month': Harris County Sheriff’s Office Warns Raintree Village Residents of Rising Auto Theft Threats
With summer temperatures rising, so are auto thefts across the Lone Star State. July marks Watch Your Car Month, and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is calling on Raintree Village residents to take proactive measures as thefts increasingly involve advanced digital tactics rather than traditional break-ins.
“Auto theft remains a serious issue in Texas, especially during the summer months,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “Thousands of vehicles are stolen each year, often from driveways, gas stations, and parking lots. Many of these incidents are crimes of opportunity, taking just seconds when vehicles are left unlocked or running.”
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), more than 77,000 vehicles were reported stolen across the state in 2023—an average of over 200 per day. The problem tends to spike during warmer months when more people are traveling, leaving vehicles idling, or parking in unsecured areas. Nationwide, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) ranks Texas among the top three states for auto theft, trailing only California and Washington.
A New Era of Car Theft
Gone are the days when thieves hot-wired cars under cover of night. Today’s auto theft rings often rely on sophisticated tools like key-fob cloning, VIN swapping, and GPS jamming to quietly remove vehicles in broad daylight—sometimes without breaking a single window.
In response to this escalating threat, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft Unit has expanded its operations. From undercover sting operations to public awareness campaigns, the unit takes a layered approach to enforcement and prevention.

“Our Auto Theft Unit is tackling these crimes head-on through investigation, arrest and prosecution, as well as public education,” Sheriff Gonzalez said. “We’re not only recovering stolen vehicles—we’re dismantling the networks behind them.”
A recently released HCSO video titled “The Fight Against Auto Theft” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the department’s efforts. Among the highlighted cases:
- A dirt bike stolen from a driveway was tracked and recovered after appearing on Facebook Marketplace.
- A luxury Lamborghini Huracán theft led to the unraveling of a six-person VIN-swapping ring.
- A prolific offender tied to retail theft and “jugging” (targeting bank customers) was apprehended.
Simple Ways to Protect Your Vehicle
Despite the growing sophistication of auto theft, many cases remain preventable. Officials stress that most crimes begin with a moment of opportunity: an unlocked car, a running engine, or keys left inside.
HCSO recommends the following steps to reduce your risk:
- Always lock your doors, even at home or in “safe” neighborhoods.
- Park in well-lit, high-traffic areas equipped with cameras.
- Remove keys, fobs, and valuables from your vehicle.
- Use a steering wheel lock and consider installing a GPS tracker.
The Sheriff’s Office also dedicates staff to combating fraudulent titles and insurance fraud, which often go hand-in-hand with vehicle theft rings.
Community Vigilance Matters
Sheriff Gonzalez encourages Raintree Village residents to report suspicious behavior immediately—whether it’s a stranger lingering near driveways or unfamiliar vehicles circling a parking lot.
“If you see something suspicious, say something,” the Sheriff emphasized. “Together, we can safeguard our vehicles and protect our community.”
