Jordan High School Sophomore Carolyn Liu Captures UIL 6A Golf State Title While Pursuing Big Dreams Beyond the Fairway
In Katy, Jordan High School sophomore Carolyn Liu is proving that students do not have to choose between the classroom and the course.
The Katy ISD standout recently claimed the UIL 2026 6A Girls Golf State Championship, finishing four strokes ahead of the competition and cementing herself as one of the top young golfers in Texas. For families across Katy, Fulshear and the growing Jordan Ranch area, Liu’s achievement represents more than a state title — it is another example of how local students continue raising the bar both academically and athletically.
At just 16 years old, Liu is already balancing ambitions that many adults would find daunting. Alongside a demanding golf schedule, she is taking five Advanced Placement courses at one of Texas’ most competitive public high schools while maintaining a strong GPA. Her long-term goals are equally ambitious: becoming a professional golfer and pursuing groundbreaking neuroscience research with hopes of one day repairing nerve cells.
“The first time I met her, she told me that her life goal is to play on the LPGA Tour and/or become a brain surgeon,” Jordan High School Golf Coach Austin Jones said. “If anybody is going to do it, why not Carolyn? I’ve seen the time that she puts into her craft. I’m really excited to see where that takes our school the next two years.”
A Sophomore Season That Turned Into a State Championship Run
Liu’s championship season did not happen by accident. According to Coach Jones, her consistency throughout the year made it clear she was capable of competing for a state title.
She fired rounds of 68 and 67 to qualify for the UIL state tournament, performances that signaled she was playing at another level heading into the championship.
“It seems crazy on the outside,” Jones said. “But you know, when you see greatness from her every day at practice or in the regular season, it's awesome and amazing. But it was not actually surprising for her to win state as a sophomore.”
Jones said Liu spent the season refining her swing mechanics, improving the torque and efficiency that made her especially dangerous off the tee. But physical adjustments were only part of the equation. Liu credits much of her growth to developing mental toughness during tournament play.
“I've gotten mentally tougher,” Liu said. “That has helped me be able to tackle the mental challenges that I have, like, keeping the lead during tournaments.”
That mindset helped her stay composed under pressure and deliver one of the most impressive sophomore performances in recent UIL 6A girls golf history.
Setting an Example for the Next Generation at Jordan High School
As Jordan High School continues building its traditions and identity in Katy ISD, Liu is already emerging as a role model for younger students and athletes navigating the balance between academics and extracurricular success.
What began as a childhood activity introduced by her parents to teach discipline and life skills has evolved into a passion that now places her among the state’s elite golfers.
“My parents inspired me the most because I feel like they're extremely hard-working and dedicated,” Liu said. “They have supported me through my golf game, and I feel like that has been a main factor of how I've been able to improve so much.”
While golf is often viewed as an individual sport, Jones said Liu’s impact on her teammates and school culture continues growing each season. With two years still remaining at Jordan High School, he believes her leadership could leave a lasting mark on the program.
Liu hopes her story encourages other students — especially young female athletes — to pursue ambitious goals without sacrificing academics.
“I want them to see that they can pursue athletics but also keep a strong academic vision around them,” Liu said. “I also want them to know that giving up is not an option, and that they should always keep going.”
Why Carolyn Liu’s Success Resonates Across Katy ISD
For many Katy-area families, Liu’s rise reflects the culture that continues shaping schools across the district — one where high achievement extends beyond test scores and championship banners.
Her story arrives at a time when student-athletes increasingly face pressure to specialize in a single path. Instead, Liu is embracing both worlds, pursuing elite-level athletics while preparing for a future in medicine and neuroscience.
The road ahead will not be easy. Competing at the highest levels of golf while studying complex scientific fields requires extraordinary discipline, focus and resilience. But if her sophomore season showed anything, it is that Liu is comfortable chasing goals that others might consider impossible.
And for Jordan High School and the broader Katy ISD community, her success is already becoming a source of pride.
