In Case You Missed It: Copper Lakes HOA Clarifies Pond and Lake Dyeing Process

February 13 2025

Residents of Copper Lakes may have questions about the pond and lake dyeing process used in the community. To clarify any concerns, the Copper Lakes HOA Board has provided information on why this treatment is necessary and how it benefits the neighborhood’s water features.

Since the ponds and lakes in Copper Lakes are man-made, they require ongoing management to prevent excessive algae growth—a common issue, especially in the hot summer months. The addition of environmentally safe pond dye will not only improve the visual appeal of the water but also help reduce algae growth by limiting the amount of sunlight that penetrates the water.

“Many people don’t realize pond dyes can help inhibit certain nuisance algae from growing,” the HOA Board explained. “Once the water dissolves the dye, it starts to absorb sunlight, reducing the depth of the photic zone and slowing down unwanted plant growth.”

What Residents Need to Know About the Pond Dye

The pond dye being used is non-toxic and safe for humans, pets, reptiles, and fish. The treatment is being conducted by a professional lake management company, ensuring the correct amount of dye is applied based on the size and volume of each pond. Residents can rest assured that fish from these waters are safe to eat, and dogs can safely swim in the dyed water without any concerns.

However, while pond dye plays a role in preventative maintenance, it is not a substitute for full pond management. Over time, leaves and organic matter accumulate at the bottom of the ponds, leading to higher nutrient levels and the potential for increased algae outbreaks. Regular maintenance efforts are necessary to keep the community’s water features in top condition.

“Maintaining an HOA pond or lake requires preventative care to ensure the body of water stays aesthetically pleasing and property values remain high,” the HOA Board noted.
