Clear the Shelters and DOGust 1st Bring Discounted Pet Adoptions to West Houston This August
For families across West Houston and the Katy area considering adding a pet to their home, August will bring an opportunity to adopt while helping local shelter animals begin a new chapter.
Citizens for Animal Protection, commonly known as CAP, will participate in the nationwide Clear the Shelters adoption campaign throughout August 2026. Adoption fees for all available animals will be reduced by 50% during the month with support from West Houston Subaru.
The monthlong campaign will begin Saturday, August 1, with a DOGust 1st celebration offering fully sponsored adoption fees for all dogs. Adoption fees for cats, kittens and other available animals will remain 50% off that day.
Both events are free to attend at Citizens for Animal Protection, located at 17555 Katy Freeway in Houston.
DOGust 1st Celebrates Shelter Dogs With Sponsored Adoptions
DOGust 1st is recognized by animal welfare organizations as a universal birthday for shelter dogs whose actual birth dates are unknown. CAP’s August 1 event gives the occasion a local purpose by connecting adoptable dogs with families ready to offer them a permanent home.
The DOGust 1st Adoption Event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, August 1.
Thanks to sponsorship from West Houston Subaru, every dog adoption fee will be fully covered during the event. All other pet adoptions will be offered at half price.
Visitors will be able to meet available puppies, adult dogs, kittens, cats and other shelter pets while learning more about their personalities and care needs.

Throughout August, all CAP adoption fees will be discounted by 50%.
The extended campaign gives prospective adopters time to consider which animal may be the right fit rather than limiting the opportunity to a single weekend. Families can return during regular shelter hours, meet different animals and speak with staff about household routines, activity levels and other factors involved in choosing a pet.
CAP is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

Every animal adopted from Citizens for Animal Protection is spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped before going home.
