How to Report a Street Light Outage in Westgate: A Simple Step That Helps Keep Evening Walks Safer

West Houston / Cypress  /  West Houston / Cypress
June 16 2026

As temperatures climb across the Houston area, many residents of Westgate are shifting their outdoor routines to the cooler hours of the day. Evening walks, bike rides, trips to the park, and neighborhood gatherings often continue well after sunset during the summer months.

That's why functioning street lights play such an important role in the community.

A street light that has gone dark may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it can affect visibility for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and families enjoying the outdoors. Well-lit streets can help residents feel more comfortable during evening walks and make it easier for motorists to see people crossing intersections or traveling along neighborhood roads.

Fortunately, reporting a street light outage is quick and easy.

How to Report a Street Light Outage

CenterPoint Energy maintains street lights throughout its electric service area, including many neighborhoods across the Greater Houston region. Residents can report a malfunctioning or burned-out street light online using CenterPoint's street light outage reporting map.

To submit a report:

  1. Visit the CenterPoint Energy Street Light Outage Reporting Map at https://gis.centerpointenergy.com/sloreporting.
  2. Enter either:The address closest to the street light, or
  3. The street light number, which is typically displayed vertically on the pole.
  4. Select the affected street light on the map.
  5. Enter information about the issue and submit the report.

The process usually takes just a few minutes and helps CenterPoint identify and address outages more efficiently.

A Small Action That Benefits the Entire Neighborhood

Summer evenings are often some of the busiest times in Westgate. Whether residents are walking dogs, exercising, visiting neighbors, or simply enjoying time outdoors after the heat of the day subsides, working street lights contribute to a more comfortable environment for everyone.

Residents who notice a dark street light during an evening stroll may want to take a moment to report it. A single report can help improve visibility along a frequently traveled path, near a playground, at a neighborhood entrance, or along a street where families gather after sunset.

Important: Street Lights vs. Power Outages

If the issue involves a broader power outage rather than a single street light, residents should contact CenterPoint Energy directly at:

Residents can also check CenterPoint's Outage Tracker for current electric outage information.

What Happens Next?

As summer continues and outdoor activity remains high, keeping an eye out for street light outages is one simple way residents can help maintain a safe and welcoming atmosphere throughout Westgate. The next time an evening walk takes you past a dark street light, reporting it may take only a few minutes—but the benefit can be felt by neighbors for weeks to come.
