For many families traveling to the Houston area for life-saving medical treatment, finding a place to stay can quickly become one of the most stressful parts of an already overwhelming situation. That’s where The Ballard House in Katy steps in — and now, students in Cinco Ranch II have an opportunity to help make a difference.

The Ballard House in Katy provides free overnight accommodations for patients and caregivers traveling to the Houston area for treatment of life-threatening illnesses. The 40-room hospitality house serves families who often face extended hospital stays, financial stress, and time away from home while seeking specialized medical care.

The organization’s roots date back to 2006, when Keller Williams Premier Realty in Katy founded Cinco Charities, Inc. to support families traveling for medical treatment. Through years of community fundraising and support — including contributions from Erin and Monty Ballard — The Ballard House officially opened in Katy in 2013 and has since become an important resource for families navigating serious health challenges.

Just a short drive from Cinco Ranch II, local students have a chance to be part of that mission.

The Ballard House is currently welcoming student volunteers, giving teens an opportunity to earn volunteer service hours while supporting families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Tasks may include helping with light hospitality services, organizing donations, assisting with daily operations, or supporting special events.

For many middle school and high school students in Cinco Ranch II, volunteering can also become a meaningful way to build leadership skills, develop empathy, and gain real-world experience serving others in the community.

Students ages 13 and older are eligible to volunteer independently through the organization’s SignUp.com system, with one hour of volunteer service permitted per day. Students age 13 and younger are also welcome to serve alongside a parent or guardian.

As summer approaches and many students begin searching for volunteer opportunities in Katy and the Houston area, organizations like The Ballard House offer a chance to do work that directly impacts real families facing serious medical challenges.

Residents interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities can visit The Ballard House website and click the Volunteer tab for registration details and available service opportunities.

For families in Cinco Ranch II, it’s also a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful community service starts close to home — by helping neighbors and strangers alike feel supported when they need it most.
