For Houston-area racing fans who enjoy the competition of motorsports on a much smaller scale, an Oct. 3 event is bringing local clubs together for a championship built around speed, strategy and a little friendly rivalry.

The 24 Minutes of Houston, hosted by Scale Auto Racing, will feature three-person teams representing local car clubs as they compete on the northwest Houston slot car raceway’s scale road course. Each team will also defend the name of a favorite automobile manufacturer, giving the competition some of the flavor of endurance racing while keeping the action small enough to fit indoors.

Winners will walk away with prizes and, perhaps just as importantly in the local slot car community, bragging rights. Scale Auto Racing describes the event as a championship race for local clubs to “fight it out” on its road course.

A Houston racing competition in miniature

Slot car racing combines model cars with an electric track that guides vehicles through grooves, or slots, while drivers control speed using handheld controllers. Competitive racing adds another layer, with participants fine-tuning cars, managing corners and trying to maintain consistent lap times.

At Scale Auto Racing, the hobby has grown into an organized local racing scene. The northwest Houston business hosts 1/32-scale slot car racing across multiple classes and brands, including a division intended for newer drivers. Its Carrera GT league races on Sundays, while other races and tournaments are held throughout the year. 

That makes the 24 Minutes of Houston more than a casual afternoon at the track. It gives established clubs a chance to compete as teams rather than simply racing as individuals, while also giving spectators and newer racers a closer look at Houston’s slot car racing community.

Scale Auto Racing offers track time for beginners and experienced racers

Located at 11303 Jones Road West, Suite C, Houston, TX 77065, Scale Auto Racing operates a handmade slot car racing facility just north of FM 1960 in the Jones Road area. The business offers open track time, weekend racing, leagues and quarterly tournaments, and customers can also walk in and rent a car for track time. 

The shop also carries slot cars, parts, controllers, die-cast vehicles and model-related products from brands including Carrera, Scalextric, Slot.it, Hot Wheels and Matchbox. 

For families, hobbyists and longtime motorsports fans around northwest Houston, Cypress and nearby communities, the facility provides an unusual way to experience racing without heading to a full-size speedway. Drivers still have to judge braking points, carry speed through turns and keep their cars on the track, but the entire competition unfolds within a room.

Scale Auto Racing says its regular weekend races are open to both experienced competitors and beginners, making the venue a possible entry point for people who have seen slot cars before but have never tried organized racing.

The Oct. 3 competition is structured around three-person teams representing local car clubs. The website also provides an online option for paying the event entry fee. 

For Houston-area slot car racers, the championship offers a chance to put club pride on the line. For everyone else, it is a reminder that the region’s motorsports community extends well beyond full-size cars. Sometimes the racing is measured in inches, the teams are gathered around a tabletop-sized road course, and the competition can still get serious.
