Harris County Pets Invites Families to Meet Their Next Companion at Paws & Pumpkins October 9
For a family thinking about adding a pet, the decision is about much more than falling for a sweet face. It is about finding a companion who fits the household—and being ready for the everyday care that turns a new arrival into part of the family. This October, Harris County Pets is giving residents a welcoming place to begin that conversation.
During Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, the shelter is encouraging residents to meet dogs and cats looking for homes and learn more about responsible pet ownership. Its Paws & Pumpkins celebration on Friday, October 9, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. adds an evening of family activities at the Harris County Pets Resource Center, 612 Canino Road, Houston, TX 77076.
The lineup includes pumpkin decorating, a candy trail for children, pup cups, a fall photo booth, giveaways, playgroups and opportunities to meet adoptable animals. It offers a way to become familiar with the shelter while enjoying an outing with the family.
What an Adoption Includes
Dogs and cats adopted through Harris County Pets are spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, and each adoption includes a one-year pet license. Those services give families a starting point for caring for their new companion; ongoing veterinary care, daily attention and a safe home remain part of the commitment.
“Adopting a pet is a life-changing decision, not just for the pet but for you too,” said Corey Steele, director of Harris County Public Health’s Veterinary Public Health Division. “Our goal is to connect pets with loving homes while helping community members live healthier, happier lives.”
Making a Thoughtful Match
Before visiting, talk through who will handle feeding, walks, litter boxes and veterinary appointments. Consider how an animal’s energy level fits the household’s routine and whether everyone is ready for the time and expense involved.
Adopters must be at least 18 and bring current identification. Adoptions take place in person on a first-come basis, and the shelter does not hold animals by phone or email. Harris County residency is not required. Bring a collar and leash or an appropriate carrier if planning to adopt. Animals still awaiting spay or neuter surgery must remain until that care is completed.
Visit Beyond the Fall Celebration
Regular adoption hours are Monday–Friday, 1–5:30 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–3:30 p.m. No adoption appointment is necessary. The October 9 celebration has its own evening hours, separate from that usual schedule.
Residents can browse animals and review adoption information at CountyPets.com or call 281-999-3191. Whether the right match happens this month or later, a shelter visit can help turn the idea of adopting into a clearer picture of life with a new companion.
