HCESD 48 will host several Safe Sitter classes in Katy over the coming months, including sessions on Aug. 15, Sept. 19, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. Each class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at HCESD 48, located at 21201 Morton Road in Katy. Registration is first come, first served, and a completed registration form is required to reserve a student's place.

For parents wondering whether their middle-school-aged child is truly prepared to stay home alone or care for another child, the course offers something beyond a simple checklist: guided, hands-on practice in situations young teens could realistically encounter.

What Teens Learn in a Safe Sitter Class

Safe Sitter is a nationally established safety and babysitting education program designed primarily for students in grades six through eight. Its comprehensive babysitting curriculum covers four main areas: safety skills, child care skills, first aid and rescue skills, and life and business skills. Classes are instructor-led and interactive, incorporating demonstrations, medical manikins and hands-on skills practice rather than relying solely on classroom lectures.

The program teaches students how to recognize and respond to emergencies, including when to call 911, basic first aid, choking rescue and CPR practice. It also emphasizes preventing emergencies before they happen — an important part of caring for younger children safely.

At HCESD 48, students practice with CPR manikins, participate in games and share experiences during class. The district also incorporates a graduation component intended to show parents what their children have learned before they leave with their new responsibilities.

That practical approach can be especially useful for Green Trails Estates parents deciding whether a child is ready to babysit siblings, begin caring for other families' children or spend limited periods at home without an adult present.

In addition to emergency response, the district offers community education and prevention programs including CPR classes, child car seat installations, Safe Sitter classes, home safety surveys and smoke alarm installations.
