From Victorian Florals to a Summer Plant Swap: Hearthstone Garden Club Invites Neighbors to Grow With Them

From Victorian Florals to a Summer Plant Swap: Hearthstone Garden Club Invites Neighbors to Grow With Them

Hearthstone  /
August 12 2026

For Hearthstone residents who have ever admired a neighbor’s garden, wondered how to create a floral arrangement or simply wanted to meet more people close to home, one of the neighborhood’s longest-running community groups is opening the door to a new season.

The Hearthstone Garden Club will kick off its 2026-27 year with its Annual August Social on Tuesday, August 18, at 6:30 p.m. at Hearthstone Country Club, located at 7615 Ameswood Road. This year’s gathering carries a “Summer Breeze” theme, tying into the club’s broader theme for the year: Color.

Guests can learn what the club has planned, hear about upcoming programs and activities, meet members and, if they would like, bring a small plant to take part in the club’s traditional plant swap at the end of the evening.

For anyone wondering whether a garden club is only for experienced gardeners, Hearthstone’s group casts a much wider net. Its activities span gardening, floral design, neighborhood beautification, education, community outreach, workshops, field trips, flower shows, plant sales and other opportunities to learn alongside neighbors.

That community presence has deep roots. Hearthstone Country Club describes the organization as more than 45 years old and an affiliate of National Garden Clubs, Inc., with activities ranging from hands-on workshops and expert programs to beautification and community service projects. The club is also listed among the Houston-area organizations in District IV of Texas Garden Clubs.

“La Fleur” Put Hearthstone Gardeners’ Creativity on Display

Residents got a colorful look at what Hearthstone Garden Club members can do this past April, when the organization presented its annual flower show at First Community Credit Union.

Titled “La Fleur,” the 2026 show drew inspiration from the Victorian era, bringing together floral design, horticulture, botanical arts, photography and educational displays.

The horticulture portion was especially rooted in members’ own homes and yards. Entries included flowers, vines, herbs, vegetables, shrubs, trees, houseplants, container gardens and other specimens personally grown by club members.

The overall winning horticulture entry was a pine bough displaying blooms, mature needles and pinecones — allowing viewers to see different stages in the life cycle of the tree through a single specimen.

Dried and preserved horticulture also had a place in the show, with entries including leaves, flowers, cones and other plant materials. A carefully preserved snapdragon earned the top recognition in that category.

For Hearthstone residents accustomed to seeing plants primarily as part of the landscape, the flower show offered another perspective: even something growing just outside the back door can become an exhibit worthy of close examination.

Victorian Tables, Floral Designs and Botanical Art

“La Fleur” extended far beyond traditional flower arrangements.

The design division featured table settings for one, table settings for two, exhibition tables and both traditional and modern floral designs, each interpreted through a Victorian theme.

Botanical arts added another layer of creativity. Members fashioned parasols decorated with dried plant materials and created pot-et-fleur designs, a style combining growing potted plants with added cut flowers.

Miniature Victorian gardens brought the period theme down to a much smaller scale, while photography entries explored still lifes, Victorian gardens and other botanical subjects.

The show also included two educational exhibits, “Botanical Play” and “The Wardian Case,” expanding the event from a competition and creative showcase into an opportunity for visitors to learn something new about the plant world.

That blend of horticulture, design and education reflects the broader garden-club tradition with which Hearthstone is affiliated. National Garden Clubs records also show Hearthstone Garden Club among past national award recipients; in the 2019 award year, the club received national recognition for community garden work involving students at Owens Elementary School.

More Than Flowers: A Longtime Hearthstone Community Connection

While the annual flower show may be one of the club’s most visually striking activities, it represents only part of what members do throughout the year.

The Hearthstone Garden Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month from August through May at 6:30 p.m. at Hearthstone Country Club. Programs are centered on gardening, floral design, education, neighborhood beautification and community outreach.

Members also participate in workshops, field trips, an annual auction, an annual flower show, two plant sales and other seasonal activities. The Hearthstone Country Club calendar similarly highlights plant swaps, community beautification, field trips, flower shows, service projects and educational programming among the club’s activities.

The organization’s connections also extend beyond the neighborhood. Hearthstone Garden Club is part of a larger network of garden organizations, including National Garden Clubs and Texas Garden Clubs’ District IV.

For a neighborhood like Hearthstone, that combination of local involvement and wider horticultural resources gives residents a place to both learn and contribute. A meeting might introduce a new gardening technique one month, lead to a community beautification effort another month and eventually inspire someone to enter a homegrown specimen or floral design in the next flower show.

No blue ribbon is required to get started.

Hearthstone Residents Invited to the August 18 “Summer Breeze” Social

The upcoming August social offers an easy entry point for residents who are curious about the club but have never attended a meeting.

Whether someone maintains an elaborate backyard garden, has a few favorite houseplants, enjoys floral design or simply wants another way to connect with Hearthstone neighbors, the evening offers a chance to see whether the club feels like a good fit.

That may ultimately be the most enduring part of a garden club’s role in a neighborhood. Plants provide the common interest, but over decades of meetings, shows, workshops and community projects, the relationships growing alongside them can become just as important.

Residents interested in learning more about Hearthstone Garden Club membership, upcoming programs, gardening events in Hearthstone or the August social may contact the club at hearthstonegardenclub@gmail.com.
