Fort Bend County’s 5th Annual Mental Health Awareness Walk Unites Community on May 2
When it comes to mental health, every step counts—and on Friday, May 2, 2025, Fort Bend County residents are invited to take a collective step toward greater awareness, understanding, and support. The 5th Annual Mental Health Awareness Walk will take place from 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM at Mirabeau B. Lamar Homestead Park, located at the Fort Bend County Justice Center in Richmond, TX. The walk officially kicks off at 12:15 PM.
With mental health challenges touching so many lives, this free public event is more than just a walk—it’s a show of unity, a space for healing, and a reminder that no one is alone.
Why Mental Health Awareness Month Matters
Held during Mental Health Awareness Month, the walk highlights a nationwide effort to remove stigma and promote the importance of mental well-being. Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been recognized each May, with organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) leading education and advocacy efforts across the U.S.
From anxiety and depression to trauma and grief, millions struggle with their mental health in silence. Events like this aim to help shift the conversation—reminding people that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

A Closer Look at Mental Health in Fort Bend County
While Fort Bend County is one of the fastest-growing areas in Texas, it’s also facing serious mental health challenges. A 2022 Community Health Assessment revealed that 46% of local households had experienced some level of mental health concern, such as depression or anxiety, within the past year.
The mental health provider shortage is also a growing issue. Currently, Fort Bend County has about 1,210 residents for every one mental health provider, compared to the state average of 760 to 1—highlighting a significant gap in access to care.
The walk is organized by Fort Bend County Behavioral Health Services (BHS), an agency created in 2010 to help individuals with mental illness—particularly those involved with the justice system. Over time, BHS has broadened its reach, offering support to high-risk populations and young victims of abuse and neglect. The department works closely with local schools, courts, health organizations, and community groups to create a coordinated response to mental health needs.
This year’s event is hosted in partnership with Fort Bend County Health & Human Services, Human Resources, Precinct 4 leadership, Risk Management, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, and NAMI.
