Fort Bend County Rolls Out First Mobile Pet Adoption Unit, Bringing Shelter Pets to the Community

August 19 2025

What began as a unanimous decision in Commissioners Court last December has now hit the streets of Fort Bend County. On August 8, 2025, local leaders, animal advocates, and residents gathered to celebrate the official launch of the county’s first-ever Mobile Pet Adoption Unit — a 26-foot, fully equipped vehicle designed to bring shelter pets out of kennels and into the community.

Judge KP George, joined by county commissioners and partners, called the launch a “new chapter in compassionate, mobile pet care,” marking a milestone for Fort Bend County Animal Services (FBCAS). The new adoption vehicle allows residents to meet and adopt animals directly at community events, parks, and neighborhoods, without needing to visit the shelter.

A Community-Backed Investment

The mobile adoption unit was approved by Commissioners Court on December 3, 2024, as a $217,500 purchase from Magnum Mobile Specialty Vehicles. Funding came through Certificates of Obligation, with all five commissioners voting in favor.

Animal Services Director Rene Vasquez explained to the court that the vehicle will house 20 to 25 animals and provide a climate-controlled, mobile space for adoption events, microchip clinics, and even emergency response during disasters.

The unit itself — a 2024 Ford E450 chassis outfitted with kennels, medical equipment, climate control, and viewing windows — is built to function as both a traveling adoption center and community outreach hub.

Why Mobile Adoption Matters

Across the U.S., mobile pet adoption programs have gained traction as a way to increase adoption rates and reduce shelter overcrowding. According to Best Friends Animal Society, nearly 6.5 million dogs and cats enter U.S. shelters annually, with mobile events helping connect animals to adopters who might never visit a shelter in person.

Fort Bend County’s need is clear. In May 2025 alone, FBCAS reported 191 new intakes and 159 outcomes, with 42 pets adopted and another 88 cats placed through its community cat program. Despite a strong 92% save rate, space remains a constant challenge.

Mobile adoption efforts give these animals a better chance by meeting families where they live, work, and play. They also create opportunities for education on spay/neuter, responsible pet ownership, and rabies prevention — all part of FBCAS’s mission.

Beyond Adoption: Education and Outreach

The Mobile Pet Adoption Unit will also serve as a rolling classroom. FBCAS regularly visits schools, HOAs, and civic groups to talk about responsible pet ownership, bite prevention, and animal welfare. Now, those lessons can include live interactions with adoptable pets, making the message even more impactful for children and families.

The county’s broader mission statement highlights the goal of reducing pet overpopulation, providing humane enforcement of animal laws, and placing animals with loving families. With this new tool, outreach will no longer be limited by geography or weather conditions.

What’s Next

The August 8 launch is just the beginning. Fort Bend County Animal Services will be announcing a schedule of upcoming mobile adoption events in neighborhoods across the county. Residents are encouraged to watch for the unit at festivals, parks, and local shopping centers — anywhere families gather.

The launch was framed as an effort not only to expand adoption opportunities, but also to integrate animal services more closely with community outreach and public education across the county.
