As you make plans for Fourth of July events in Katy and Fulshear, don’t forget to brush up on fireworks safety and local rules. Fireworks can be exciting, but they also come with risks—and in many neighborhoods, restrictions.

Fireworks Safety Tips: Avoid Injuries and Fires This Independence Day

Each year, fireworks send thousands of Americans to the emergency room. In 2023, over 10,200 fireworks-related injuries were reported nationally, with 73% occurring around the Fourth of July, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Even sparklers can burn at 1,200°F, hot enough to cause serious burns. Common injuries include:

  • Hands and fingers (31%)
  • Legs (24%)
  • Head and face (19%)
  • Eyes (12%)

If you're using fireworks at home in Katy or Fulshear:

  • Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
  • Never try to relight dud fireworks—soak them in water.=
  • Appoint a sober, responsible adult to supervise.
  • Avoid using fireworks after drinking alcohol.

Whenever possible, attend professional fireworks shows near you—several are listed in our Katy and Fulshear July 4th event guide.

Are Fireworks Legal in Katy or Fulshear? HOA and City Ordinance Reminders

Many HOAs in Katy and Fulshear restrict or ban fireworks entirely due to fire risks and noise complaints. In some cases, violating HOA fireworks rules can lead to fines or other penalties.

Before lighting any fireworks:

  • Check your HOA’s fireworks policy
  • Review local fireworks ordinances in Fort Bend and Harris counties
  • Consider safer alternatives like LED sparklers or glow sticks for kids

Pet and Child Safety During Fireworks: What Katy and Fulshear Families Should Know

Loud fireworks can frighten pets and pose dangers to small children. If you’re celebrating at home:

For pets:

  • Keep them indoors in a quiet room
  • Use white noise machines or calming music
  • Make sure ID tags are current in case they run off

For kids:

  • Never let children handle fireworks, including sparklers
  • Use hearing protection for loud booms
  • Watch from a safe distance and supervise closely

With just a few safety measures and a quick check of neighborhood rules, you can enjoy a fun, safe, and complaint-free Independence Day. Wishing all Katy and Fulshear residents a joyful, safe, and memorable Fourth of July!
