For families in Eagle Landing, Harris County’s annual budget process can feel far removed from everyday life — until the conversation reaches the services residents rely on, the neighborhoods they travel through and the public investments that affect safety, affordability and resilience.

That is why Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis is inviting residents to a Harris County Budget Town Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sunnyside Health and Multi-Service Center, 4410 Reed Road in Houston.

The meeting comes at an important point in the county’s budget calendar. Harris County’s proposed budget is expected to be released Monday, Aug. 17, beginning what Ellis described as the most consequential stretch for public participation before Harris County Commissioners Court considers amendments and ultimately adopts a final budget in September.

“This is your budget, and your voice should help shape it,” Ellis told residents in announcing the town hall.

Harris County’s budget helps determine how public resources are directed across a county of communities with different needs, including neighborhoods within Precinct 1 such as Eagle Landing.

“Harris County budget season is here, and the decisions made over the next month will shape the services and investments our communities depend on,” Ellis said.

According to the commissioner, this year’s budget discussions are taking place as households continue to face higher costs and local governments navigate tighter resources. Ellis said his priorities during the process include protecting essential services while focusing county investments on safety, affordability, fairness, efficiency and resilience.

“Even in this difficult budget year, I’m fighting to protect essential services, strengthen our communities, and pass a budget that supports working people,” Ellis said.

The Harris County Precinct 1 Budget Town Hall is expected to focus on the proposed county budget, the decisions ahead for Commissioners Court and the ways residents can participate in the process.

Ellis said the discussion will center on what is at stake and how the public can make its voice heard while the county works toward what his office calls a “SAFER Harris County for All,” built around investments in safety, affordability, fairness, efficiency and resilience.

The timing gives residents an early opportunity to review the broader direction of the proposed budget almost immediately after its scheduled Aug. 17 release.

For homeowners, families and taxpayers, participating before the final vote can provide a chance to raise neighborhood-specific concerns while commissioners are still considering changes.
