Cypress Creek High School to Undergo $23 Million Renovation and Expansion Starting May 2025
Cypress Creek High School, located at 9815 Grant Rd., Houston, TX 77070, is preparing for a $23 million renovation and expansion aimed at improving facilities, modernizing infrastructure, and enhancing security. According to an official permit filing, the construction project is scheduled to begin in May 2025 and conclude by July 2026, bringing significant upgrades to the campus.
This large-scale improvement plan is part of the 2019 Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) bond referendum approved by voters in May 2019, which allocated $1.76 billion for infrastructure improvements, safety upgrades, and new school facilities.
Scope of Work: Major Additions and Interior Renovations
The VLK Architects, Inc.-designed renovation includes new building additions and extensive interior and exterior upgrades. Per the project manual, the primary focus areas of the project include:
-
New Construction & Expansions: Additions to five key areas of the existing high school, including a new orchestra rehearsal hall, two new art classrooms, and an auxiliary music rehearsal room.
-
Facility Upgrades: Renovations of the Black Box Theater, industrial technology rooms, kitchen expansion, and cafeteria updates.
-
Athletic Enhancements: Refinishing gym floors, adding two new tennis courts, and improving on-site traffic flow for buses and car drop-offs.
-
Security and Safety Improvements: Installation of a new fire alarm system, security fencing, and backup power for telecommunications rooms.
-
Infrastructure Upgrades: Updates to HVAC systems, boiler replacement, and electrical switchgear upgrades to modernize the school’s systems.

Construction Timeline and Community Impact
Construction work will be phased to minimize disruptions to students, staff, and the surrounding community. The 2025 summer session will allow contractors full access to the building starting June 2, 2025, with select areas—such as athletic and fine arts spaces—set to reopen by July 15, 2025.
During the school year, most construction activities will take place after hours, nights, and weekends to ensure minimal interference with classes and school operations. The final phase in summer 2026 will focus on completing remaining upgrades, with full campus access restored by July 26, 2026.
Funding and Community Investment
The renovation project is fully funded through CFISD’s 2019 bond referendum, which prioritized infrastructure and facility improvements across the district. The bond includes $968.9 million for renovations and additions, ensuring that aging facilities like Cypress Creek High School, which opened in the fall of 1977, receive necessary updates to meet modern educational standards.
What Students, Families, and Residents Can Expect
As the project unfolds, students and staff should expect temporary adjustments in facility access, with some classrooms and common areas undergoing phased renovations. Local residents may notice increased construction activity, including on-site contractor staging areas, equipment deliveries, and occasional traffic detours.
