Cypress Brewery Misfit Brewing Wins Gold at 2026 Great American Beer Festival, Adding to Award-Winning Year
A small Cypress brewery has earned one of the highest honors in American craft brewing, giving local beer enthusiasts another reason to celebrate a hometown business. Misfit Brewing won a gold medal at the 2026 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) for its Sludge Factory Imperial Chocolate Stout, bringing national recognition to a brewery that proudly embraces its small size.
The award, announced October 11, 2026, places Misfit Brewing among medal-winning breweries and cideries from across the country. For the Cypress business, it is also the latest achievement in an impressive year for Sludge Factory, which has now earned medals in three major beer competitions.
In a Facebook announcement following the festival, Misfit Brewing shared its excitement about bringing the gold medal home to Cypress, writing, “We’re extremely proud and ecstatic to have the privilege to compete and produce award winning beers from our very very small brewery.”
Sludge Factory Imperial Chocolate Stout Earns Three Major Awards in 2026
Misfit Brewing's Sludge Factory Imperial Chocolate Stout has been building an impressive record throughout 2026, earning recognition at both state and national competitions.
The beer's awards this year include:
- Gold Medal: 2026 Great American Beer Festival
- Silver Medal: 2026 Texas Craft Brewers Cup
- Bronze Medal: 2026 U.S. Open Beer Championship
Imperial chocolate stouts are generally known for their rich, dark character, with roasted malt and chocolate flavors that distinguish them from lighter beer styles. The style can be especially challenging to balance, as brewers work to bring together sweetness, roasted flavors, body and alcohol strength without allowing any one element to overwhelm the others.
For Misfit Brewing, the three medals represent recognition from separate competitions, each evaluating beers against its own judging criteria. The latest gold medal is particularly meaningful because of the size and national reach of the Great American Beer Festival competition.
What Is the Great American Beer Festival, and Why Does This Gold Medal Matter?
Organized by the Brewers Association, the Great American Beer Festival is one of the country's most prominent annual craft beer competitions. It brings together breweries from across the United States, giving both established producers and smaller independent operations an opportunity to have their beers evaluated by expert judges.
The 2026 competition drew 7,267 beer, cider and hop water entries from 1,300 breweries and cideries, representing 49 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Over three days, 225 expert judges evaluated the submissions, with more than 200 volunteers supporting the competition. Ultimately, 336 medals were awarded to 243 breweries and cideries. The awards ceremony took place October 11 at Levitt Pavilion and was livestreamed by The Brewing Network.
This year's competition also introduced several new categories, including rice lager, hop water and a special craft malt category, along with expanded specialty beer and gluten-free classifications. The changes reflected the growing range of styles and techniques represented in American brewing.
With an average of 67 entries per category, earning a medal meant standing out among numerous competing beers. The competition also welcomed 125 first-time entrants and recognized 12 first-time winners.
For a small independent brewery in Cypress, receiving a gold medal at an event of this scale is a notable accomplishment, particularly when competing alongside breweries with significantly larger operations and greater distribution.
From Homebrewing Roots to National Recognition in Cypress
Misfit Brewing's story began with a passion for science, experimentation and making beer. Founded by Juan Sanchez and Sarah Nadeem, the brewery grew out of Houston's homebrewing community and began commercial operations in 2021 before establishing its current Cypress location in May 2023.
Located at 16103 Grant Road, Suite J, in Cypress, Texas, Misfit Brewing operates a small 3.5-barrel brewing system and specializes in hoppy ales, stouts and lagers, often incorporating experimental ingredients and brewing techniques.
One example of the brewery’s creativity is Sludge Factory, a 10.5% alcohol-by-volume imperial chocolate stout conditioned on cocoa nibs. The brewery's lineup also includes Grant Road Gold Pale Lager, Draven Black Pilsner, Clean Slate Dry-Hopped Pilsner and Mango Whip Fruited Sour Ale, offering visitors a range of styles beyond its award-winning dark beers.
Misfit Brewing was already earning recognition before this year's national gold medal. In 2025, its Lair of Coconut Imperial Stout received bronze in the Decadent Beer category at the Texas Craft Brewers Cup. Sludge Factory followed with silver in the Chocolate & Coffee category at the 2026 state competition.
For Cypress residents who enjoy supporting locally owned businesses, Misfit Brewing's success offers a reminder that some of the Houston area's nationally recognized craft beers are being made right in their own neighborhoods.
A National Win for Cypress and the Greater Houston Craft Beer Community
Misfit Brewing was not the only Houston-area brewery recognized at the 2026 Great American Beer Festival. Saint Arnold Brewing Company earned silver for Lawnmower in the Golden or Blonde Ale category, while Katy-based No Label Brewing Co. received silver for Perpetual Peace in the Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer category.
Together, the awards brought additional national attention to the Greater Houston craft beer community, where independent breweries continue to produce beers recognized beyond Texas.
For Misfit Brewing, the gold medal is an opportunity to introduce more people to a small Cypress operation that has spent years developing its recipes and building a following. It also gives longtime customers something to celebrate alongside the people making the beer.
