Description

Texas Master Chorale begins their 39th season with the Requiem by Maurice Duruflé. The Requiem is Duruflé’s greatest and best-known work, a testament of faith, comfort, and tranquility all unequaled among music written in the 20th century.

Duruflé completed the Requiem in 1947 and the first performance followed two months later. He had been working on a suite for organ solo based on the Gregorian chants of the Mass for the Dead. This was expanded and transformed to become the Requiem.

The concert also includes music by Handel, Gjello and Davis. Handel’s Zadok the Priest was written for the Coronation of George II in 1727 and has been performed at every Royal coronation since.

Ola Gjello is a Norwegian composer that has had a tremendous impact on choral music around the globe. His music is often described as evocative and cinematic with lush harmonies, something he developed after gleaning inspiration from living in America.

Taylor Scott Davis is a composer whose roots are in Texas and has been commissioned by the Texas Master Chorale to compose a large work for our 40th anniversary season. Our fall concert will include his newly written work, Jubliate Deo, for chorus and orchestra. Hailed by the Wall Street Journal as penning “Dreamy vocal lines”, that overlap and intensify to stunning effect.
