
Native American Heritage Day Festival

Join staff and volunteers from 9 - 12 p.m. on September 9 at the Akokisa Village at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center in Humble for a celebration of indigenous culture. Observe demonstrations about the Indigenous Peoples that lived in Southeast Texas, including foraging with Dr. Mark "Merriwether" Vorderbruggen. The Chikawa Aztec Dancers perform at 11:30 a.m.
All ages are welcome; this program is great for Scouts. Wear closed-toed shoes and bring a reusable water bottle for the 1/3-mile hike on a gravel trail to the replica village (near the Redbud Hill Homestead). Refreshing concessions and native plants will be sold by the Jesse Jones Park Volunteers. No reservations needed.
As part of the festivities, join us at 1:00 p.m. in the nature center for a presentation about the Karankawa Peoples and the history of Indigenous Peoples in the Coastal Bend from author Tim Seiter. Ages 10+. Reservations recommended at www.pct3.com.
Following Mr. Seiter (around 2:30 p.m.), we are pleased to host Dan Worrall, author of "A Prehistory of Houston and Southeast Texas" for a presentation called “Lifeways of Early Peoples of the Coastal Prairie, Houston and Southeast Texas” in the nature center.
