Residents on San Antonio’s growing Far West Side could have another familiar dining option headed their way. A new Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen is planned at 11256 Alamo Ranch in San Antonio, putting the full-service restaurant near Potranco Ranch West and adding another national brand to the expanding Alamo Ranch area.

According to project information provided for the development, the new Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen is planned as a 6,181-square-foot restaurant with an estimated construction cost of $3.8 million. The project calls for new construction of the full-service restaurant along with associated site work and landscaping.

Construction is currently scheduled to begin Feb. 15, 2027, with an anticipated completion date of Aug. 23, 2027. The project is privately funded and planned on private property. Those dates represent the current construction schedule and could change as the project moves forward.

For families in Potranco Ranch West, the location is noteworthy because it would bring Cheddar’s farther into the Alamo Ranch area, where continued residential and commercial growth has steadily expanded the number of restaurants, retailers and services available closer to home.

A Texas Restaurant Brand With More Than 45 Years of History

Cheddar’s may be a national restaurant chain today, but its roots are firmly planted in Texas.

Founders Doug Rogers and Aubrey Good opened the first Cheddar’s in Arlington, Texas, in 1979. Even the restaurant’s name has a bit of Texas classroom history behind it. According to the company, a fifth-grade class suggested the name “Cheddar’s” after the founders asked for ideas.

The restaurant was previously known as Cheddar’s Casual Cafe before adopting the Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen identity in 2015, reflecting its emphasis on food prepared in-house. Cheddar’s became part of Darden Restaurants in 2017.

The brand has grown considerably from that first Arlington restaurant. Darden reported 187 company-owned Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen restaurants as of Aug. 30, 2026. Cheddar’s own website describes its footprint as more than 180 restaurants across the United States.

New Alamo Ranch Cheddar’s Would Expand the San Antonio Footprint

The planned Alamo Ranch restaurant would join an established Cheddar’s presence in San Antonio.

Current San Antonio locations include restaurants at 7403 NW Loop 410 and 15607 I-10 West, while another Cheddar’s operates at 31 NE Loop 410 near the North Star area.

That makes the planned 11256 Alamo Ranch restaurant particularly relevant for residents west of the existing locations. For people in and around Potranco Ranch West, a new restaurant in the Alamo Ranch corridor could mean a shorter trip for a brand that already has a following across San Antonio and Texas.

What’s on the Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Menu?

Cheddar’s has built its identity around American comfort food and dishes prepared in-house, with a menu that covers everything from casual lunches to family dinners.

Among the restaurant’s signature offerings are its hand-breaded chicken tenders, Homemade Chicken Pot Pie, Country Fried Steak, Country Fried Chicken, grilled salmon, Santa Fe Spinach Dip and Homemade Onion Rings. Its Monte Cristo combines smoked ham and turkey with cheese before being battered, fried and finished with powdered sugar and raspberry preserves.

Then there are the Honey Butter Croissants, one of the foods most closely associated with Cheddar’s. The croissants are baked in-house and drizzled with honey butter, and the restaurant says guests receive a complimentary croissant with their meal.

Cheddar’s also offers family bundles and To Go ordering, giving families another option for meals at home in addition to traditional sit-down dining.

Another Restaurant Investment in the Alamo Ranch Area

Beyond adding another place to eat, the proposed $3.8 million Cheddar’s project represents another piece of commercial investment in this part of San Antonio.

The project documents call for a newly constructed restaurant rather than the renovation of an existing space. At 6,181 square feet, the development will include the restaurant itself along with related site improvements and landscaping.

No opening date has been announced by Cheddar’s. The currently listed Aug. 23, 2027 construction completion date should not be interpreted as a confirmed restaurant opening date, since restaurants typically require additional preparations before welcoming customers.

The company has also not yet released hiring information specifically for the planned Alamo Ranch location.

Cheddar’s has a community component beyond its restaurants as well. Through its Harvest Program, participating restaurants donate unused surplus food to local food bank partners. The company says more than 160 restaurants participate in donations benefiting more than 150 food banks.

What Happens Next

With construction currently planned to begin in February 2027, residents should expect the site to take shape over several months if the project proceeds according to its filed schedule.

For San Antonio’s Far West Side, the project is another sign of restaurant and retail investment following residential growth into the Alamo Ranch area. And for Cheddar’s fans nearby, the prospect is considerably simpler: those Honey Butter Croissants could soon be a little closer to home.
