Barkley’s Bookshelf Marks Two Years of Empowering Children Through Literacy

March 06 2024

Barkley’s Bookshelf, a nonprofit organization rooted in Northwest Houston, was born from the passion of five women dedicated to literacy, children's welfare, and promoting volunteerism in March of 2022. Led by President and Founder, Brenda Polivka, this organization is now in its second year, thriving on fostering a love for reading and serving the community.

With over 25 years of nonprofit experience in the Greater Houston Area, Brenda Polivka is an experienced community leader with a deep-seated passion for children's causes, particularly in the field of literacy. Polivka oversees the daily operations of Barkley’s Bookshelf, propelled by her belief that access to reading resources and literacy skills is a determinant of future success.

Barkley’s Bookshelf collaborates extensively with local nonprofits, including Cy-Hope, Cy-Fair Helping Hands, and Boys and Girls Country, among many others. The organization also works closely with Title 1 schools to identify children who could benefit from personal libraries and enhance their literacy skills.

The primary goal of Barkley’s Bookshelf is to cultivate a love for reading among children by providing them with their own books, from birth through high school. Since its inception, the organization has successfully distributed over 7,100 free books to children who otherwise lack reading resources outside of school.

As it celebrates its second year of operation, Barkley’s Bookshelf continues to passionately advocate for children's literacy. The nonprofit's vision is simple yet profound: Every child is a reader, and every child is a book owner.
