A Generational Transportation Project

After more than two decades of studies, environmental assessments, and public engagement, residents have a unique opportunity to voice support for a project that will be transformational—enhancing safety, improving connectivity, and strengthening Fort Bend County’s ability to attract investments and create high-paying jobs.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is currently narrowing the list of route options for the proposed State Highway (SH) 36A South project, a new north-south highway segment connecting FM 1994 south of Needville to I-10 west of Katy. As TxDOT evaluates this highway corridor, Fort Bend County residents and commuters should understand why the project deserves support.

Safeguarding Families and Livelihoods

As our population continues to grow, a critical priority is establishing a designated and well-planned hurricane evacuation route. SH 36A would help thousands of Brazoria and Fort Bend County residents get out of harm’s way when a major storm or other emergency threatens the Texas Gulf Coast.

At the same time, traffic congestion continues to worsen. Planning for SH 36A began about ten years ago, and the project has gone through multiple feasibility studies, environmental assessments, and public meetings. It is now entering a pivotal planning and development phase.

A Safer Route for Cargo Growth

The project will also support the dramatic increase in freight activity at Port Freeport, which is investing to become Texas’s deepest port. The Port’s growing role in petrochemical exports and goods imports is creating a substantial rise in truck traffic.

Currently, Highway 36’s two-lane configuration cannot handle the volume of heavy truck traffic. Building SH 36A provides a more efficient and safer alternative to prevent the existing system from being overwhelmed.

Diversifying the Economy and Tax Base

Fort Bend County has long been known as a bedroom community, with most residents commuting 30 minutes or more to Houston and the Energy Corridor for work. More than 75% of county revenue currently comes from residential taxpayers—a model that is unsustainable in the long term.

The SH 36A project will help diversify the economy by attracting commercial and industrial investments and creating employment centers throughout the county. These freight-dependent businesses will generate demand for services, create thousands of well-paying jobs, and reduce the county’s reliance on residential property taxes.

Be Informed & Voice Your Support

TxDOT recently hosted in-person and online public scoping meetings to share details about the project, including eight proposed routes. Residents are encouraged to review the materials and submit comments in support of SH 36A before the deadline.
