34 CFISD Wrestlers Qualify for 2023 UIL State Championships

Thirty-four wrestlers from 11 CFISD high schools placed in the top four of their respective weight classes at the Region III-6A Wrestling Championships on Feb. 10-11 at the Merrell Center in Katy to qualify for the UIL Class 6A Wrestling State Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 17-18 at the Berry Center. 
 
The Cypress Ranch High School girls’ wrestling team won the team title at the Region III-6A Wrestling Championships. Six Mustangs were among 34 CFISD wrestlers to qualify for the UIL Class 6A Wrestling State Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 17-18 at the Berry Center. 
 
In the girls’ tournament, four CFISD schools finished in the top 10 and six placed among the top 15 led by Cypress Ranch High School. The Mustangs claimed the regional championship after finishing with 183.5 total points.  
 
Cypress Creek High School (94 points) placed fourth, Jersey Village High School (67) placed seventh and Cypress Springs High School (67) tied for 10th, respectively. Cypress Woods(53), Langham Creek (50) high schools placed 12th and 14th. 
CFISD had seven girls’ regional champions: 
  • Cypress Ranch sophomore Arianna Beltran-Villalobos won the 100-pound title, defeating Clear Falls’ Minha Castillo, 7-1; 
  • Cypress Springs senior Brooke Trevino won the 120-pound title, pinning Cypress Creek sophomore Chamille Bryson in 3:00; 
  • Cypress Ranch junior Mariah Smith won the 126-pound title, defeating Cypress Falls freshman Aviana Caceres, 3-0; 
  • Cypress Ranch junior Mariana Bozo won the 132-pound title, defeating Katy Taylor’s Natalie Miranda, 8-6; 
  • Cypress Ranch junior Sara Garza won the 145-pound title, pinning Jersey Village junior Alexis Booth in 2:51; 
  • Langham Creek sophomore Amy Sorto won the 165-pound title, defeating Cypress Ranch junior Raylan Ross, 4-3; and 
  • Cypress Ridge senior Asia Young won the 235-pound title, pinning Humble Atascocita’s Charlize Aventuna in 3:17. 
In the boys’ tournament, Cypress Ranch had the highest team finish, placing sixth overall with 94.5 total points. Langham Creek finished eighth (72) and Cy-Fair High School finished ninth (69), while Cypress Creek (58) and Cypress Falls High School (44) placed 13th and 15th, respectively. 
 
 
 
Cypress Lakes High School senior Trent Evans won the 144-pound title boys’ regional title. He was among 10 individual CFISD regional champions. 
 
CFISD had three boys’ regional champions: 
  • Cypress Creek junior Kevin McAleavey won the 120-pound title, defeating Katy Partow’s Carlos Gonzalez, 7-1; and 
  • Cypress Lakes senior Trent Evans won the 144-pound title, defeating Katy’s Owen Vaught, 12-2. 
  • Cy-Fair senior Ethan Anderson won the 215-pound title, defeating Katy’s Dimitrios Katsigiannis, 15-6. 
The fifth-place wrestler in each weight class will advance to state as an alternate. The following 34 wrestlers and nine alternates placed in the top five in the region:

Cypress Ranch High School senior, Brayden Grier was among 34 wrestlers to qualify for the UIL Class 6A Wrestling State Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 17-18 at the Berry Center.

  • Kohen Coffman, Cypress Ranch, 138 pounds; 
  • Logan Soileau, Langham Creek, 150 pounds; 
  • Jaime Craven, Bridgeland, 165 pounds; 
  • Evan Sebesta, Langham Creek, 175 pounds; and 
  • Aidan Shumate, Cypress Woods, 285 pounds. 
Fourth Place 
  • Dylan Arredendo, Jersey Village, 157 pounds; 
  • Alex Ebert, Cypress Falls, 175 pounds; 
  • Donovan Smith, Cypress Springs, 215 pounds; and 
  • Nicholas Martinez, Cy-Fair, 285 pounds. 
Fifth Place (alternates)

  • Ashton Gamboa, Cypress Ranch, 126 pounds; 
  • Kooper Good, Cypress Ranch, 132 pounds;

  • Demond Thomas, Cypress Falls, 165 pounds. 

Langham Creek High School sophomore Amy Sorto won the 165-pound girls’ regional title to advance to the state tournament.
