Annual Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off Event Returns to Katy: Clean Up, Recycle, and Connect for Community Betterment

April 01 2024

Mark your calendars for April 6, 2024, and prepare to roll up your sleeves for the annual Keep Katy Beautiful (KKB) Trash-Off event. The event, dubbed "Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off," will take place at Katy's First Baptist Church, located at 600 Pin Oak Rd, Katy, TX 77494, from 9 AM to noon. This initiative is led jointly by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Keep America Beautiful in a bid to encourage locals to participate in the largest one-day cleanup event in the state.

Participants are encouraged to form teams with friends, family, or neighbors to help clean their community. The KKB will provide all necessary tools for the job, including gloves, high-vis safety vests, trash pickers, and bags. It's not just about a tidy town, it's an opportunity to mingle, connect with others, and demonstrate an active role in community betterment.

Adding to the day's activities, a special drive-thru recycling collection will be held. A plethora of items will be accepted for recycling, from electronics like computers, laptops, monitors, and printers, down to various digital devices such as cellular phones and smart devices. A wide range of disposed IT components will also be accepted, including keyboards, mice, speakers, cords, cables, external disk memories, hard drives, circuit boards, and even electronic chips.

The Trash-Off also presents an excellent time to offload old appliances that are cluttering your home. Metal scraps, refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, microwaves, washers, dryers, irons, ironing boards, bicycles, scooters, rims, and BBQ pits are just a few of the old items welcomed at the event. Even Christmas lights, extension cords, fans, and light fixtures are accepted.

But it's not all about the big stuff. Paper of all varieties (excluding cardboard), for those overdue spring cleans and office clear-outs, will be accepted. Plastic bags must be clean, free of debris, and cover categories like grocery bags, produce bags, dry cleaning bags, plastic mailer bags, and envelopes.

The Lions Club of Katy and Beyond will also be present at the event and is calling for donations of gently used prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. This collection aims to recycle and donate the items to those in need.

There are, however, restrictions on what can be collected. Items not acceptable for collection include cardboard, plastic bottles, radioactive and hazardous waste, CRT monitors, motor oil, paint, yard debris, and pallets.

Join the Trash-Off event with Lee Katy Beautiful and the City of Katy, be part of the solution, and help keep Katy beautiful while recycling responsibly.
