Lamar CISD Middle Schooler Becomes Superintendent for a Day: A Day of Fun, Fundraising, and Leadership
Middle school student William Frazier had an experience of a lifetime this week when he was honored with the third Annual Superintendent of the Day, hosted by the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation (LEAF). The sixth-grader from Wertheimer Middle School spent a day wearing the shoes of Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens.
To set the tone for the day and make the most out of the experience, William's first decree was issuing an executive order to nearly 50,000 students across 48 campuses to dress in 90's attire and prepare for a dance party. The morning began with a festive send-off at his home campus where he received a surprise check worth $1,043.89, collected throughout the week, for his favorite charity, Hope for Three.

(Source: LCISD)In the middle of the event, a brief insight into the LEAF, the organization that helped make this magical moment come to fruition, reveals a dedication to supporting education. Established in 2000, the LEAF is a nonprofit led by a volunteer board of directors comprising local industry, business, and community leaders. With the support of the local foundations, Lamar CISD staff, community/business partners, and parents, LEAF has provided more than $5 million in funding for teacher grants and district-level programming since its inception.
Throughout Superintended of the Day, William toured the district, meeting staff, including the Lamar CISD Police Department and K-9's Jumbo and Tigi, earning his honorary badge, uniform and a VIP tour of a patrol car.

(Source: LCISD)Engaged in activities such as tasting new recipes, writing checks to vendors, and hiring new principals, William had a taste of the responsibility of a District Superintendent for the first hypergrowth school district in Texas. "Today made me happy because people were cheering for me," he said. His favorite part of the day was meeting new people and feeling celebrated.
LEAF Executive Director Kameela Lewis spoke highly of the enrichment this event brought to William's life. "I am grateful for our staff and partners who are always willing to support activities like this and go the extra mile for our students."
